"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 1" dominated the weekend box office, making $123 million in ticket sales and landing the biggest box office debut of 2014.

Despite its impressive ticket sales, the film earned much less than its predecessor, "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire," which debuted with $158 million last year.

'Hunger Games: Mockingjay -- Part 1' Boasts Biggest Opening Of T
"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay--Part 1" scored $55 million in ticket sales on opening day on Friday, the largest of the year. The film, starring Jennifer Lawrence, is expected to make between $125 million and $130 million over the weekend.

"Mockingjay," however, is far behind the first two films, grossing 20 percent less than "Hunger Games" and "Catching Fire," according to Variety. The predecessors debuted at $152 million and $158 million, respectively.

Globally, the film has earned more than $67.5 million during its first three days of release.

It's a big weekend for "Hunger Games" fans- after a year of waiting, the final "Hunger Games" film has made it to theaters. And it will make it to theaters again, next year, because paying twice to see two halves of the same movie is the new "it" thing.

But no matter- the first of the last "Hunger Games" films (what?) is here. Thai Cinemas Pull 'Hunger Games' After Protestors Adopt Film's T
Several theaters in Thailand have banned "The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1" after protestors started using the film's three-fingered salute as an anti-authority symbol.

The pro-democracy activists are protesting the government that was put into power following a military coup in May.

Protesters had planned a mass demonstration outside a cinema in Bangkok to mark the opening of the new film on Thursday. In response, one of the country's leading cinema chains has reportedly cancelled all screenings of "Mockingjay."

"The Hunger Games" is being adapted into a stage production and will debut in London in summer 2016. The "innovative" project will be held in a brand new theatre next to Wembley Stadium.
