Does Eli Roth Have An 'Evil Gene'?

October 29th, 2011 12:00pm EDT
Eli Roth
Actor/director Eli Roth is no stranger to exploring the nature of evil. As a master of horror with films like "Inglorious Basterds" and "Hostel," Roth turns his lens to research possibly the most horrifying monster of them all - the average American.

In Curiosity's "How Evil are You?," Roth sets out to recreate the infamous Milgram experiment to see how, or if, the results have changed. Roth himself even undergoes tests and scans to see if he carries what researchers dub "the evil gene."

So does Hollywood's famous horror director have a little extra "edge" in his craft?

The show pre...

Eli Roth's Maze Of Terror At Universal Is 'Not For Kids'

August 3rd, 2011 8:14am EDT
Eli Roth
Moviemaker Eli Roth has warned horror fans not to take their kids into his maze of terror during Universal Studios theme park's Halloween celebrations this year because the attraction is strictly R-rated.

The "Hostel" director has been working on the idea with Universal bosses for the past eight months, and he's convinced it will shock and terrify the hardiest film fan when it opens in the run-up to October 31 at the California theme park.

Roth has been a regular at the park's annual month of horror nights and the Eyegore Awards, which launch the freaky festivities, for over a decade and ...

31 Days Of Horror, The Final Chapter: 'Interview With The Vampire,' 'The Stuff,' 'Hostel'

November 2nd, 2010 11:05am EDT
Interview with the Vampire
Oct 29 – Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles (1994): When Twlight hit it big a couple of years ago, the main complaint about the series was that it sissified vampires. After all, Stephanie Meyer’s brood of moody nightwalkers is an attractive bunch, one that sparkles in the sunlight and pines over high school crushes—traits that don’t really cut an intimidating figure. But when you look back on vampires in popular culture, they have always been an effete bunch of nocturnal dandies. So complaints that Robert Pattison was too pretty and too teenie-bopper to play an effective vam...

Eli Roth's Pet 'Micro-Pig' Upsetting His Neighbors

September 7th, 2010 8:17am EDT
Eli Roth
Horror director Eli Roth's pet pig is causing a disturbance in his swanky Los Angeles neighborhood, because it won't stop screeching.

The Hostel filmmaker is the proud owner of a miniature pig but admits the creature has caused him a lot of problems with his famous neighbors.

He tells Britain's Empire magazine, "I recently got a micro-pig, and my pig is so loud, it screeches like a hawk. I tried to take it for a walk, so it goes down the stairs, then it starts screaming. My neighbors come out of their house and they think that I'm stabbing someone. So I point to my micro-pig and say, 'I...

Eli Roth Blasts Critics That Don't 'Understand' His Movies

September 5th, 2010 5:00pm EDT
Eli Roth
Director Eli Roth has slammed critics of his horror films, accusing reviewers of failing to "understand" his movies.

The actor/filmmaker gained notoriety with his graphic 2005 slasher movie Hostel, which provoked a storm of controversy and led some film critics to label the shocking project "torture porn."

But the star insists reviewers are just not interested in watching horror movies.

He says, "I think the term 'torture porn'... says more about the critics than it does about the film and their complete lack of understanding or frankly interest in those types of movies."

Eli Roth's Bloody Bar Mitzvah

August 11th, 2010 10:30pm EDT
Eli Roth
Horror movie director Eli Roth got an early start in the genre by turning his Jewish Bar Mitzvah into a blood bath - his mum hired a magician to saw him in half.

The "Hostel" filmmaker was into gore and guts at an early age - and refused to take part in the traditional coming-of-age ceremony unless his parents helped him perform the stunt.

But Roth's extended family didn't get the joke when fake blood started pouring from the stage props, and they started screaming in horror.

He says: "I have cousins in Scarsdale (New York) who are still traumatised to this day from that Bar Mitzvah...

31 Days Of Horror - Wrap Up

November 2nd, 2009 3:35pm EST
Demons
With Halloween come and gone, Starpulse writer Kris King has wrapped up his horror movie marathon. For the last three days Kris deals with the demon apocalypse

in "Demons," gets beaten up by a large French man in "Martyrs," and makes a lot of boob jokes with "Elvira, Mistress of the Dark."

October 29 - Demons (1985)

"Demons" starts off as a wickedly clever meta-movie. While Wes Craven's "Scream" discusses the rules of horror films and then applies them to its own story, the Dario Argento produced "Demons" goes a few steps further by setting the film in an old movie theater. "Demons" pu...

Think Your Vacation Was A Disaster? Movie Vacations That Went Terribly Awry

July 29th, 2009 8:30am EDT
Deliverance
Vacations can be stressful. You have to figure out where to go, how to get there, what to do when you get there. Once you decide where to go, there's all that

stress to DO something rather than relax and appreciate your surroundings. Inevitably, something always goes wrong be it a flat tire leaving you on the side of the interstate or an unexpected discovery that eating shrimp makes you break out into a horrible rash. Vacations never seem to go as planned.

Countless movies capitalize on the dissonance that often spring from supposedly rejuvenating vacations. Sometimes the twists and tur...

A History Of Violence: Great Britain's Video Nasties

October 27th, 2008 9:43am EDT
The Evil Dead
In the mid-1980s while American mothers panicked over the influence rock music had on the nation's youth, the mothers of Great Britain panicked over an entirely different matter. Rather than setting their crosshairs on Quiet Riot or Prince, the British went after ultra-violent exploitation films. While in America, the music industry carried on mostly unharmed, the rabble of concerned parents in the UK influenced legislation which led to dozens of films being banned by the government. In 1984, the British government released a list of films they considered too vile for public consumption. Th...

Point/Counterpoint: Should M. Night Shyamalan Stop Making Films?

July 11th, 2008 9:52am EDT
M. Night Shyamalan
When somebody mentions the name M. Night Shyamalan it evokes an immediate reaction. For some it's, "He's the guy who did The Sixth Sense, which was great," and for others it's, "Yeah, but his last few films sucked."

Two Starpulse writers have their own opinions about Shyamalan and whether he is just gearing up for further success or whether it's time for him to call it quits:

POINT

Alright, people need to lay off M. Night Shyamalan. Sure he is a little cocky (He stated that The village was one of the greatest ideas ever) and his films have seemed to have dipped in quality, b...

DVD Review: 'Hostel: Director's Cut' Is Generous, In Depth

January 8th, 2008 2:00pm EST
Hostel
When it comes to horror films, or any film for that matter, I always look forward to the director's cut. Hostel was advertised as the sickest, most twisted and scariest horror film to be made in the last 10 years. However, I wondered how all this could be packaged into an R-Rated film (you can thank the MPAA for that bit of confusion).

After its release, people either praised or absolutely hated the film and Eli Roth's filmmaking abilities. Being the curious writer that I am, I wanted to get it straight from the source: Eli Roth and those involved in the making of "Hostel." And thanks...

Starpulse's Top 10 Most Horrifying Films

October 16th, 2007 11:36am EDT
Elm Street
Most people confuse horror and horrifying. Believe me, I’m a fan of the classics: Nightmare on Elm Street, Evil Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and so on. I enjoy my share of zombies, gore, masked villains and horny teenagers who never seem to learn that getting some means certain death.

However, the horror films that interest me the most are the ones that I can’t watch again or can’t watch very often. When something is truly horrifying, it should screw with you psychologically and make your skin crawl. Here are my "Top 10 Most Horrifying Films."
