Things get mighty silly in Hold On!, which is clearly a knock-off of Help with Herman's Hermits standing in for the Beatles. The result is an agreeable if hardly memorable little film, the enjoyment of which will largely depend upon the viewer's fondness for the 1960s and/or the Hermits themselves. No one would ever accuse the Hermits of being in the same league as the Fab Four, least of all the Hermits themselves, but they were a very pleasant pop group that turned out some hits that were undeniably catchy. Not surprisingly, the musical portions of Hold On! are its best moments, with the boys in good form and with Shelley Fabares around to contribute a number or two as well. Of these, Fabares' "Make Me Happy" and the boys' "A Must to Avoid" and "All the Things I Do For You Baby" are arguably the best; "The George and Dragon" is unarguably the worst. When there's no music, things turn sour, as the screenplay is extraordinarily lame and falls flat constantly. The lads are not particularly strong actors, which would be okay if they compensated by having particularly strong personalities. They don't, and so the effect is of watching some very nice guys cavorting around in a silly fashion -- not unpleasant, but it wears out after a while. Craig Butler, Rovi
