The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
The third part of Peter Jackson "Hobbit" trilogy has a new name.

Originally titled "The Hobbit: There and Back Again," the final installment will now be called The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies.

Jackson made the announcement on his Facebook page on Thursday, explaining the reason for the change.

"'There and Back Again' felt like the right name for the second of a two film telling of the quest to reclaim Erebor, when Bilbo’s arrival there, and departure, were both contained within the second film," the director writes. "But with three movies, it suddenly felt misplaced — after all...

Stephen Colbert
Self-professed J.R.R. Tolkien super fan Stephen Colbert landed a brief but glorious cameo in The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug.

The cable news pundit was long rumored to have snagged a small role in the second installment of The Hobbit trilogy, based on the writer's popular fantasy novels, and eagle-eyed filmgoers have spotted the late-night talk show host's fantasy-turned-reality , as a lurking hooded spy.

Colbert, who director Peter Jackson dubbed the biggest Tolkien geek he had ever met, has made his adoration for the writer and his book series no secret.

Last year, the renowned ...

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug held off a resurgent Frozen to keep its top spot at this weekend’s box office, and The Wolf of Wall Street was the only new film to crack the top 5.

According to Box Office Mojo’s estimates, The Hobbit made $29.8 million over the weekend, inching above Frozen’s $28.8 million. Frozen made $11 million more than it did last week in a rare box office bounce-back.

The Wolf of Wall Street opened at number 5 with $18.5 million, although it made an impressive $9 million on Christmas Day. Other new releases include The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, which made $13...

The Hobbit Desolation of Smaug
"The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug" barely took the number-one slot at the box office on Christmas Day. The second installment of the fantasy franchise opened on Dec. 13 and has held on to its position for two consecutive weeks.

On Dec. 25, "The Hobbit" made $9.3 million and was followed closely behind by Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio's "The Wolf of Wall Street," which made $9.1 million.

Coming in third was Will Ferrell's comedy "Anchorman: The Legend Continues," which took in $8.1 million. Rounding out the top five were Ben Stiller's "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty" ($7.8 mill...

Box Office Predictions: 'Hobbit' Vs. 'Anchorman' Vs. 'American Hustle'

12/20/2013 10:11am EST
Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues
1) The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug- 35M Weekend, 126M Total

Even with an impending 50% drop, it looks as if The Hobbit is going to win the weekend, but Will Ferrell and company are putting up a big fight. Had Anchorman opened on Friday, the demand might have put it higher, but with a spread out 5 day weekend.

2) Anchorman 2- 30M Weekend, 45M Total

The hit comedy managed 8M on Wednesday, putting it on a fast track for a huge weekend, heading into an even bigger Christmas. The counter programming here is perfect, as it is really unlike everything else in the top 10. An Anchorman 3 seem...

Box Office Predictions: 'The Hobbit' Headed For #1

12/13/2013 1:30pm EST
The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
1) The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug- 78M Weekend, 78M Total

The general consensus was that the last Hobbit was not on par with the quality of the first Lord of the Rings trilogy. The first Hobbit opened to 86M, breaking a December record. The second should see a small-ish dip, due in part to the people who didn’t like the first enough to rush out and see the second. Plus, there’s a ton of competition.

2) A Madea Christmas- 24M Weekend, 24M Total

Good God. Tyler Perry and Madea are back for what some critics have called “the worst Tyler Perry movie ever.” (Roger Moore). However, that k...

'The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug' Is An Improvement But Runs Too Long

12/13/2013 7:36am EST
The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
They're back... The Hobbit, Bilbo Baggins, who now has the ring in his possession; the Elves, that can do things with a sword that I've only dreamed of; the super ugly Orcs; the brave dwarves, who just want to go home again; the all wise, all knowing wizard Gandalf; and the fire breathing narcissistic dragon Smaug, (voice of Benedict Cumberbatch).

'The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug' - shot in 3D, directed by Academy Award winning filmmaker. Peter Jackson - is the second part of 'The Hobbit' (BTW: there will be one more next year).

Don't mean to sound cynical, but personally, I think th...

The second trailer for the middle film in Peter Jackson's "Hobbit" trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, has been released, building plenty of anticipation for the film's December release.

Desolation picks up right where the first film, An Unexpected Journey, left off; with Bilbo (Martin Freeman), Gandalf (Ian McKellen) and the party of 13 dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage) continuing their quest to the Lonely Mountain to reclaim its treasure and defeat its current inhabitant: the dragon Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch).

Other than the usual quick glimpses of the act...

The Morning Roundup: New 'Hobbit' Trailer, 'This Is The End' Kills It, Down To Three On 'The Voice'

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
The first trailer for "The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug" is out, and the second film in Peter Jackson's trilogy looks like it's set to deliver on the action. There's also a good shot of the dragon's head, but unfortunately we've yet to hear it talk with the voice of Benedict Cumberbatch. There's also a few clips of the only female in the film, Evangeline Lilly, who plays the elf warrior Tauriel. Die-hard fans may not like her though, because she wasn't in the book. Nor was evil Orc chief Azog but for more than a mention by the wizard Gandalf. (story)

The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug
The first official trailer for the second film in Peter Jackson's Hobbit trilogy, The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug, has finally arrived.

The trailer is voiced over by the Elvenking Thranduil (Lee Pace), who asks, "Where does your journey end? You seek that which would bestow upon you the right to rule. The quest to reclaim a homeland and slay a dragon."

From the look of the trailer, the next film promises plenty more action than the first installment, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, beginning with the dwarves making their escape from the Wood Elves and culminating with the first goo...

Second Full Trailer For 'The Hobbit' Released, Features More Action & More Gollum!

9/19/2012 12:19pm EDT
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey
Three days before "Hobbit Day" Warner Bros. films has given us an early present: the second full trailer for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (watch it below!)

While the first 2:27 clip introduced us to the Dwarf party and a few of the familiar locales from J.R.R. Tolkien's classic -- such as Hobbiton, Rivendell and Gollum's cave -- the second 2:32 trailer is filled with plenty of action.

But while the wizard Gandalf explains that the "dwarves are determined to reclaim their homeland" in the Lonely Mountain, there's still no mention of its current inhabitant -- the dragon Smaug.
