Top Ten Films Of 2011
Two Jews on Film - By Joan Alperin Schwartz: 2011 was a year filled with very eclectic films. We had movies about the end of the world, ('Melancholia' and 'Take Shelter') traveling back in time,('Midnight In Paris') homages to the early days of film-making, ('The Artist,' 'Hugo') as well as movies about some of our favorite sports, ('Moneyball' and 'Win Win').

We found ourselves laughing hysterically at a comedy about girl bonding, ('Bridesmaids') had our hearts touched by a few family films, ('We Bought A Zoo,' 'Extremely Loud And Incredibly Close') and a couple...anything but...('Tree Of...

Review: 'Hesher' Is Just What the Doctor Ordered

5/15/2011 4:07pm EDT
Losing a loved one is never easy, especially when that person is your wife or your mother. Even though everyone copes with death at their own pace, most people prefer to isolate themselves and wallow in their own misery. In Spencer Susser’s drama “Hesher,” Paul Forney (Rainn Wilson) and his son TJ (Devin Brochu) are no different. They have immersed themselves in grief since TJ’s mother was killed in a tragic car accident.

Paul and TJ have shut themselves off emotionally from everyone around them, including Paul’s mother Madeleine (Piper Laurie), who lovingly cooks and cares for the...

Joseph Gordon-Levitt Talks About His Long Haired Headbanging Days

5/10/2011 3:00pm EDT
Joseph Gordon-Levitt seems like a clean cut gentleman these days, in movies like Inception and (500) Days of Summer. In Hesher, he plays a long haired headbanger. That is actually who he was as a teenager.

“I grew my hair long when I was like 12, 13 so that I could headbang to Metallica and Guns N’ Roses and stuff,” Gordon-Levitt said. “Then I got on a TV show and they dug my hair but then they wouldn’t let me cut it when I wanted to so I had to keep it for years, which was whatever. I can’t complain. Once I got to cut it I was relieved. By that time I was dying to cut my hair.”

After 3rd...

Trailer Talk: This Week in Movies - 'Bridesmaids,' 'Priest' & More

5/9/2011 11:00am EDT
I apologize to all my faithful readers that there was no Trailer Talk column last week. Between my coverage of IFF Boston and a trip to Chicago, unfortunately it was just not in the cards. I did see some great flicks though at IFF Boston and met some interesting filmmakers. If you haven’t already checked out the coverage, definitely read my reviews and watch my interviews.

Of the movies that came out last week, I had already seen Jodie Foster’s third directorial effort “The Beaver,” starring Mel Gibson. In his role as the mentally ill Walter Black, Gibson puts forth a very raw perform...

Review: 'Hesher' 'Two Jews On Film' Agree This Off Beat Indie Is A Must See (Video)

5/4/2011 11:37am EDT
'Hesher' directed by Spencer Susser stars Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Hesher. There are several things that Hesher likes a lot, loud music, pornography and burning stuff to the ground. He brings all of his favorite things into the lives of 13 year old TJ (Devin Brochu) and his father Paul (Rainn Wilson) when he unexpectedly takes up residence in their garage, uninvited.

Told through the eyes of TJ, HESHER is a dark fairy tale about an eccentric unhinged drifter who appears out of nowhere to help a struggling family deal with loss. TJ and his father are simply going through the motions of th...
