In the mid l960's, America was being torn apart by race riots. Stanley Kramer took a huge gamble by starring Spencer Tracy, Katharine Heprburn, and Sidney Poitier in this movie of racial tolerance. Kramer and Hepburn, and Tracy had to put their fees into escrow to protect Columbia in case Tracy died during shooting. Thankfully he finished the Film days before his Death. One watches this movie and watches the consummate film actor Spencer Tracy deliver a magnficent performance. The ending is now part of foklore as Tracy declares his love for his Wife, played by Hepburn. His great speech and Hepburn's reaction shot is one of the great scenes in movie History. Kate Hepburn always felt she got the Oscar as a Consolation Prize by the Industry to Her on Tracy's death. Nonsense. Her performance is most worthy of her Oscar. If you note the ending scene where Tracy and Hepburn host the Wedding Couple and family at Dinner, Kate fluffs her hair. Very natural. A Lady. Spencer Tracy lost to Rod Steiger. Had Spencer Tracy lived, the Academy without a doubt would have awarded him the Oscar. Steady support by Sidney Poitier and Hepburn's real neice Katharine Houghton. A fine Film with two of the towering greats of the silver screen in their final film together. Guess Who's Coming To Dinner was one of the biggest hits in Columbia Pictures history. | ||
