Green Card Review
Internationally renowned French film star Gérard_Depardieu made his first bid at Hollywood success with the light romantic comedy Green Card. Director Peter_Weir wrote the part specifically for the actor; it was his first English-language role of any note. Though he continued to appear in American productions -- including the big-budget 1492: Conquest of Paradise (1992) and the dreadful remake of My Father the Hero (1994) -- few were as well-received as Green Card. The actor is complemented by his appealing co-star, Andie MacDowell, and Weir gives his predictable material a breezy touch. A moderate success, Green Card was clearly not in the same box-office league as Weir's previous mainstream hits, Dead_Poets_Society and Witness. Weir garnered an Academy Award nomination for his original screenplay. Brendon Hanley, Rovi
