Smarter Than The Average Movie Star Natalie Portman Turns 30

June 9th, 2011 10:00am EDT
Natalie Portman
“I'd rather be smart than a movie star,” Natalie Portman once said. ...Turns out she’s both.

The young actress has always been a fascinating contradiction. Youthful in appearance, yet always so mature in her choices, her acting and her lifestyle. A child star who was never childish, (even at just 12 years of age in Leon), she has a natural maturity far beyond any of her peers. Which is why she’s lasted where others have crashed and burned.

Discovered by an agent in a pizza parlour at the age of 11, Portman was being groomed for a modelling career before deciding she’d rather pursue acting...

Since her intense breakout role in 1994’s “The Professional,” Natalie Portman has been one of the most respected and versatile actors working in Hollywood. Her filmography spans over 15 years but is as impressive and solid as Audrey Hepburn’s or Meryl Streep’s, two actresses to whom she has rightfully been compared.

It makes sense that Portman has become one of the most talented performers in Hollywood considering the amazing list of directors with whom she’s worked:

Luc Besson (“The Professional”)

Michael Mann (“Heat”)

Ted Demme (“Beautiful Girls”)

McMainstream: The Evolving Independence Of The Music Scene

As I perused the soundtracks section of a local music store last week, I stumbled upon the Grey's Anatomy Soundtrack, Volume 3. Having apparently missed Volumes 1 and 2, and, admittedly, having only caught the actual show on one or two occasions, I had little notion of Grey's musical backdrop.

But I went in with my assumptions. After all, this is the show that brought "McDreamy" to our national lexicon. Wouldn’t it follow that its music would be lighthearted, upbeat, and, well... McDreamy?

That’s when I flipped the CD over and read the names of the artists on the back.

Portman says, "After I'd done all the Star Wars movies, a lot of people were thinking of giving me the dramatic challenges I was ready for. I mean no offense at all to Zach, but I wanted to work so badly." ...
