Check Out 'Gangster Squad' On DVD, Blu-ray & More April 23

4/20/2013 7:04am EDT
Gangster Squad
On the crime-infested streets of Los Angeles in 1949, a secret squad of police officers led by two unwavering sergeants (Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling), labors to take down the ruthless mob boss Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) and free his grip on the city in the Warner Bros. film "Gangster Squad."

Cohen runs the show in this town, reaping the ill-gotten gains from the drugs, the guns, the prostitutes and - if he has his way - every wire bet placed west of Chicago. And he does it all with the protection of not only his own paid goons, but also the police and the politicians who are under his contr...

Review 'Gangster Squad': Sean Penn Is Stellar As The Ruthless Mickey Cohen

Gangster Squad
The year is 1949, the place Los Angeles and ruthless, sadistic, megalomaniac, Jewish gangster, Mickey Cohen (the brilliant Sean Penn) runs the show in this town.

We're talking drugs, guns, prostitutes, and if he had his way, every wire bet placed west of Chicago, would fall under his domain.

The guy is ruthless and a total nut job, completely lacking in charm. He's definitely no Michael Correleone.

To get an idea how Cohen's mind works, at some point in the film, he yells to his crew of killers:  ''You heard of Manifest Destiny? That's when you take what you can, when you can...And I'm g...

Gangster Squad Poster
Welcome to the second Weekend Movie Preview of the New Year. As you might suspect based on last week’s reviews of “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Promised Land,” I’m still catching up on screeners from 2012 and probably will be for the rest of this month. You can keep up with my progress weekly by checking out the mini movie reviews on my website.

Today’s column features the first new film that I’ve seen in 2013: Ruben Fleischer’s “Gangster Squad.” It also contains my thoughts on the trailer for the Marlon Wayans horror spoof “A Haunted House.”

Review: With The Generic 'Gangster Squad' What You See Is What You Get

1/9/2013 3:00pm EST
Gangster Squad
Sometimes movie trailers can be downright deceiving, portraying a film one way but then actually being the complete opposite.  In the case of the generic and uncomplicated looking "Gangster Squad" it’s one of those rare occasions when the preview actually hit the nail on the head – what you see is what you get.

Mickey Cohen is a dangerous and lethal man with affinity for power.  He has decided to make his home not in the mob-ridden area of Chicago, but in the rich spoils of Los Angeles.  Enter tough cop John O’Mara, an ex-war veteran with a no-nonsense attitude and a serious chip on his sh...

Ryan Gosling Takes His Mom To 'Gangster Squad' Premiere & Emma Stone Looks Red Hot - See Photos!

Ryan Gosling Gangster Squad premiere
Reason number 106 to love Ryan Gosling - he took his mother to the "Gangster Squad" premiere. Swoon! The actor looked gangster cool in a brown suit and studded shoes with his mama by his side.

Gosling elected not to take his girlfriend Eva Mendes to the event, and his likability factor really couldn't get any higher. Remember when he acted as a good citizen and broke up a fight in New York City a couple of summers ago? He also saved a life last spring by pulling a woman out of harm's way when a taxi almost ran her over.

He could possibly be the perfect man.

Gosling wasn't the only celeb ...

Gangster Squad
As a result of the Aurora cinema massacre in Colorado last month, the cast of "Gangster Squad" is back on the set to reshoot some scenes.

Following the Colorado shooting, in which 12 people died, Warner Bros. pulled trailers for the film from cinemas because footage included a shoot-out at a movie theatre.

Studio execs have taken further action by completely removing the insensitive scenes, which were filmed at Hollywood's famous Chinese Theatre.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, reshoots are expected to take place next week in Downtown Los Angeles, where the shoot-out sequence will ...

The release of Ryan Gosling's new Mafia movie Gangster Squad has been delayed to allow film bosses to edit out a scene featuring a shooting in a cinema.

The film, which also stars Emma Stone, Sean Penn, and Josh Brolin, was due to hit theatres in September, but the release date has now been changed following the mass killing of cinemagoers in Colorado on Friday .

Ryan Gosling in Gangster Squad
The latest trailer for Gangster Squad has hit the Internet, and with it come a lot of bullets and snazzy suits. The film follows a group of L.A. cops that drop their badges and hunt Mafiosos that come in from the East Coast.

Based on a true story, Brooklyn born Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) heads to L.A. to become the drug and prostitution kingpin. After buying his way out of lawful troubles, the police department creates a secret group of officers. They work without rules, red tape, or badges - and the department will refuse they exist.

The trailer features plenty of action and sexy-times w...
