March 29th, 2013 10:55am EDT
Gangs of New York
Martin Scorsese is set to bring his Gangs Of New York back to life for a small screen version of the Oscar winning 2002 film.

Daniel Day-Lewis played Bill 'the Butcher' Cutting alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Cameron Diaz in the movie, which focused on the corrupt underworld of New York at the turn of the 19th Century.

Now, 10 years after the movie picked up the Best Picture Oscar, Scorsese has teamed up with bosses at Miramax studios to transform the story for TV. The series will chronicle gang culture from New York, Chicago and New Orleans.

Tyler Perry And Other Famous Movie Studio Fires

May 2nd, 2012 4:50pm EDT
Tyler Perry
A fire last night at Tyler Perry Studios in Atlanta nearly threatened to put Madea out of commission. Luckily, the Atlanta police arrived in time to stop the blaze with only some damage to backlot facades - Perry can get back in his dress as soon he wants. However, this reminds us of other fires that damaged legendary Hollywood studios.

2008 saw Universal Studios' worst fire, taking 12 hours to put out and damaging many of the classic backlots (including Courthouse Square from Back to the Future) and the original King Kong ride. Reconstruction included the new King Kong 360 attraction and ...

Spotlight: Liam Neeson - The Unexpected Movie Star

January 27th, 2012 3:00pm EST
Liam Neeson in The Grey
This weekend, audiences will get the chance to see Liam Neeson fight a pack of hungry wolves in order to say alive in “The Grey” from director Joe Carnahan. Though he has become a worldwide action star with films like “Taken” and “Unknown,” 15 years ago the Irish-born former amateur boxer was better known for dramas like “Schindler’s List” and “Michael Collins.” That’s not to say he takes the craft of acting any less seriously now than he did back then. He is still as talented and charismatic as ever, only now he seems to be having a lot more fun.

So how did Neeson go from being a serious ...

The Strange And Surprising Career Of Cameron Diaz

June 23rd, 2011 1:00pm EDT
Cameron Diaz
Cameron Diaz is anything but a predictable actor. This Friday, “Bad Teacher” opens and will showcase Diaz’s R-rated comedy skills opposite Justin Timerlake and Jason Segel, an alumnus of the Judd Apatow school of raunchy humor. Directed by Jake Kasdan (“Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story”), Diaz stars as the world’s worst teacher who would rather get high in her car than teach her kids anything. While most moviegoers see her as just a pretty face who pops up in mediocre films, Diaz has had an incredibly unique and varied career in Hollywood over the last two decades.

Her breakthrough role ca...

Asthma Kept Martin Scorsese From Mob Life

September 18th, 2010 4:00pm EDT
Martin Scorsese
A childhood illness saved Martin Scorsese from a life of violent crime in his native New York, according to his longtime cinematographer.

The director was raised in Little Italy in the 1940s and 50s, when the Manhattan neighborhood was ruled by the mob.

And he admitted to Michael Ballhaus, his director of photography on movies "Goodfellas", "The Departed" and "Gangs of New York," that he would have turned to crime had a bout of asthma not forced him to stay indoors.

Instead, Scorsese spent hours watching television and cultivating his love of film.

Ballhaus tells GQ magazine, "(Scorsese...

Shutter Island

Who The Heck Is... Eddie Marsan?

Eddie Marsan
They don't get top billing. You know the face but can't quite place the name. Though they toil in the shadows of more famous leads, to imply that character actors merely 'support' is to vastly underrate the contributions of many remarkable entertainers: Often, it is the performance of lesser-knowns that leaps from screens large and small into the hearts of an audience, leaving them with both a lasting impression and a question that begs to be answered: 'Who the heck is that?'

As a misunderstood 19th-century rent-collector called Pancks, British actor Eddie Marsan sputters and guffaws his...

The Most Underrated & Overrated Films By Martin Scorsese

May 9th, 2008 9:25am EDT
Martin Scorsese
Martin Scorsese. The name, like no other director of the modern era, is completely synonymous with quality. A trailer branded with "A film by Martin Scrosese" instantly becomes a must-see for cinephiles, no matter what clips preceded the title card.

Images of dramatic shootouts scored by classic rock and sharp-tounged dialogue of the underworld enter people's minds when they think of Scorsese. The man has changed much about the way films are made. His use of popular music inspired a generation long before MTV, and the way he made violence pop off the screen was a direct antecedent o...
