And he was so determined to get a realistic reaction from his onscreen wife, he colluded with the crew to create giant genitalia he could pass off as his own.

McAdams tells Stella magazine, "Channing got the props department to make a prosthetic, um, member. Literally a fake penis. I didn't know what to do, ...

Razzie Awards Preview
For the past 30 years on the evening before the Hollywood revels in its own glory at the Academy Awards, the Golden Raspberry Awards do the best they can to gleefully throw sand in the industry's face. The Golden Raspberry Awards (or Razzies) are a kind of Anti-Oscar, dolling out cheap plastic statuettes to the worst movies that Hollywood plops onto the guileless public every year.

Heading up this year’s awards with 7 nominations each are the ultra-big budget sequel “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” and the comparably expensive box office sink pit “Land of the Lost.” “Transformers” wa...

Taylor Lautner Drops 'Max Steel' For 'Stretch Armstrong'

2/28/2010 9:00am EST
Taylor Lautner has reportedly pulled out of playing crimefighter Max Steel - to devote himself to the upcoming Stretch Armstrong movie.

The hunky teen actor had signed up for both action roles but has now opted out of Max Steel, about a sports star-turned-secret agent, to focus on a new blockbuster based on a bendable action figure produced by toymakers Hasbro.

Lautner is believed to have dropped the part because toy manufacturer Mattel, which produces Max Steel figures, has not been as successful in Hollywood as Hasbro, responsible for the Transformers and G.I. Joe film franchises.

The other day Sylvester Stallone revealed that he had a metal plate placed inside his neck after a freak accident while filming a fight scene for his new movie The Expendables. Stallone has always insisted on doing his own stunts, and said he had his worst injury while filming Rocky IV. He insisted that co-star Dolph Lundgren actually punch him during takes, and Dolph delivered a stunning punch to Stallone's chest. His ribs compressed agains...

Is Excessive CGI And No Plot Becoming A Trend In Movies?

9/10/2009 11:14am EDT
Transformers 2
A few weeks ago I got to see 15 minutes of James Cameron's "Avatar" on the IMAX in 3D, and it was some of the best CGI ever seen on the big screen. For years Cameron has promised a big comeback and at least visually this movie looks like it will truly deliver when it comes out in December. And yet ... what little they revealed of the plot felt contrived, and the dialogue was stiff. A soldier sneaking undercover in another society and then falling in love with this new culture and trying to make peace between the two nations. Viewers have seen that before, but what makes "Avatar" different h...

Summer Movie Awards Part 1: Surprise Hit, Biggest Bombs & More

9/9/2009 9:53am EDT
G.I. Joe
Now that Labor Day has come and gone, the official end to summer has now passed. Yes, the days will now be shorter, the weather cooler (unless you're smart enough to live in Southern California like this column's scribe), and for some school resuming its session, but there's also a lot of good news.

TV is back, football is back, and summer movie season is finally at its end. Yes, no more summer movies, no more endless weekends filled with event films that shatter theater speakers and routinely melt screens with too much rambunctious action. It's a thankful end to a season that routine...

Toy Movies 101: A How-To Guide To Make Them More Watchable

9/1/2009 12:13pm EDT
With the success of Transformers and G.I. Joe, Hollywood is scrambling to find the next toy that can be adapted for the big screen. This is both exciting and a little scary, as these movies tend to have very little middle ground: They're either blow-your-mind amazing, or so bad that you can actually hear your inner child dying as you watch.

With this in mind, and with a very real interest in keeping our inner child alive (which barely survived Transformers 2), check out some helpful guidelines for anyone looking to make a movie based on toys.

Pick the right toy. Just because some to...

The Syfying Of Science Fiction Is Both Good & Bad

8/29/2009 2:00pm EDT
True Blood
Everyone seems really into vampires lately. Sexy vampires that have steamy vampire sex with each other all the time. If not vampires than it's people with psychic abilities (Psych) or people that travel through alternate dimensions. And that's just on television. These days a major blockbuster movie can't make a return without aliens (District 9), killer robots (Transformers) or wizards (Harry Potter). We live in a time where Quentin Tarantino is playing with alternate history (Inglourious Basterds) and weepy chick flicks are about time travel (The Time Traveler's Wife).

The Oscar Season Begins In August With Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds'

8/28/2009 11:02am EDT
Inglourious Basterds
The year in movies is always split into two different seasons. First, there's the endless malaise of the Winter, Spring and Summer where we suffer with movies intent on doing nothing more than making money. The second season is much more fruitful, it's when movies care about making money and winning awards.

This moment the season changes is often hard to pinpoint. Normally it occurs in late October when every single movie seems to have a minor-key melody scoring its trailer and actors from Britain make their first appearances.

Sometimes, however, awards season comes in with a ban...

Ranking The Toy Movies: Worst to Best

8/26/2009 10:00am EDT
Transformers 2
The title's pretty self-explanatory, so let's not waste any time.

Masters of the Universe (1987). This movie is based on the popular He-Man action figures, and draws from a story that includes magic, advanced weaponry, and a battle of good versus evil that spans the whole universe. How is it possible, then, that the finished product could be so bad?

For starters, the movie ignores most of the great story, choosing only to depict what is essentially the last day of a battle that has been going on for years. Character development is nonexistent, and the movie features no backstory beyon...

Sarah's Cinema Musings: When A Remake Is Redundant

8/17/2009 2:37pm EDT
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
As many of you have noticed, even those of you who have sought residence under a comfortable moss-laden rock, there is a virus in cinema. This virus is the concept of the remake. Yes, in a time when production budgets are dependent on a 'sure bet', there will be hyper-formulaic films. The issue now is the remake-remake. Confused? You are not the only one. Remakes of remakes, sometimes more positively spun as 'reimaginings', are not unheard of. 'Batman', 'Superman', and many of the old sci-fi classics like 'War of the Worlds', 'Dracula', 'The Day the Earth Stood Still', amongst many o...

August Can Be A Viable Movie Month Despite Its Reputation

8/12/2009 5:01pm EDT
The Bourne Ultimatum
While Hollywood has staked out late May, June and July as prime summer movie territory, August has gotten lost in the shuffle. August isn't as big of a dump month as September or January, but you usually don't find studios queuing up to put their surefire tent pole smashes there.

With summer winding down, younger audiences are turning their attentions back to school, families are getting in one final vacation, and cooler weather in some regions are all valid reasons why studios feel like box office for their mega-budgeted pictures would be affected by an August release.

Which leaves...

'G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra' Tops Box Office

GI Joe Box Office numbers
G.I. Joe is the latest toy to invade Hollywood and plant its blockbuster flag. Inspired by the Hasbro action figure, "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" took command of the weekend box office with a $56.2 million debut domestically. Worldwide, "G.I. Joe" has marched to $100 million.

"G.I. Joe" follows the "Transformers" franchise as the latest toy story to find success on the big screen.

Meryl Streep's Julia Childs tale "Julie & Julia" opened a solid No. 2 as an alternative for adult crowds with $20.1 million.

While "G.I. Joe" was the first choice for young males, women 35 and older were...

Review: 'G.I. Joe: The Rise Of The Cobra' Is Pretty Damn Entertaining

8/7/2009 2:23pm EDT
G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra
When comparing "G.I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra" to that awful fellow Hasbro monstrosity "Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen," "Joe" plays out like a goddamn Federico Fellini film. Coherent plot, well established characters, discernible action sequences (Also: no racist robot caricatures, so there's that). It's always kind of fun to write a negative review - especially when the studio doesn't screen it for said writer, early. Unfortunately, for those purposes, "G.I. Joe" is kinda, sorta ... good (!?) This wasn't the way it was supposed to be. THIS WASN'T THE WAY IT WAS SUPPOSED TO BE!
