Comedian Martin Lawrence's chubby alter-ego, Big Momma, beat Emma Thompson's ugly Nanny McPhee in a battle of the family films at the US box office this weekend. Lawrence's Big Momma's House 2 stormed to the number one spot with a surprise $28 million opening weekend take. Nanny McPhee came in second with a $14.1 million debut.

Jim Carrey was left devastated when his daughter called him the "ugliest woman" she'd ever seen after watching him shoot a scene in new comedy Fun With Dick And Jane. Carrey, who stars opposite Tea Leoni in the new movie, wasn't prepared for the criticism his offspring Jane gave him, but he reluctantly agreed with her frank assessment.

Fun With Dick and Jane is a remake of the 1977 comedy in which a struggling couple (Jim Carrey, Tea Leoni) turns to robbery in order to pay the bills. In Cheaper by the Dozen 2, Tom Baker (Steve Martin) and wife Kate (Bonnie Hunt) want to bring their family together for a memorable summer vacation at the rustic Lake Winnetka. But their retreat soon becomes cutthroat when they enter a competition with the over-achieving members of a large family headed by Tom's long-time rival, Jimmy Muraugh (Eugene Levy).

* Christina Applegate’s actor husband Jonathan Schaech has filed for divorce. The star wed Applegate in October 2001 and has reportedly hired top divorce lawyer Laura Wasser to fight for him in court. The divorce is a tough blow for Applegate, who has been apart from Schaech for much of 2005, starring in the Broadway hit musical “Sweet Charity.”

NBC's "Saturday Night Live" brings out new faces and perennial favorites in December. The late night show's hosts this month include comedian Dane Cook, actor Alec Bladwin and funnyman Jack Black. They will be joined by musical guests James Blunt, Shakira and Neil Young.
