Best of 2011 - Jason Coleman's Top Ten Films

December 30th, 2011 3:20pm EST
The Skin I Live In Photo
2011’s crop of movies had its fare share of interesting ups and downs. On the down side, it’s a year of movies with a ton of potential that for, one reason or another, ended up disappointing due to various bad elements. There were actor/director re-teaming’s brought down by bad casting (Jessica Chastain, terrific in "The Help," proved totally out of place in the Michael Shannon/Jeff Nichols flick "Take Shelter") and annoying characters (wish they could just excise Carey Mulligan’s annoying sister from the Steve McQueen/Michael Fassbender flick "Shame" – and leave the rest!), not to mentio...

31 Days of Horror - Week 3: 'Fright Night!' 'The Walking Dead! 'Red State!'

The Wolf Man
Day 14: The Wolf Man (1941)

I don’t have much to say about The Wolf Man, so I’ll try to keep things brief for both our sakes. I can see why Lawrence Talbot is largely thought of as being the best and most sympathetic of Universal’s line of howly monsters. He’s such a lope-a-dope schmo, a guileless man-child who likes to work with his hands and can’t turn away from a pretty face—even when that face is, ahem, engaged. So it’s kind of a bummer to see the big buffoon turned into a murderous monster who eventually gets bludgeoned to death by his father. Lon Chaney Jr. gives perhaps the most h...

'The Help' Crushes 'Conan' At The Box Office

August 22nd, 2011 8:29am EDT
The Help
Sleeper summer film hit The Help has topped the U.S. box office in its second week on release.

The movie, starring Bryce Dallas Howard, Viola Davis and Emma Stone, has made an impressive $20.5 million over the weekend to take over the top spot from Rise of the Planet of the Apes.

"The Help" has now made over $70 million since its release earlier this month.

Rise of the Planet of the Apes comes in second place with a third-weekend take of $16.3 million and the rest of the top five features new movies, which garnered disappointing ticket sales.

Spy Kids: All the Time in the World in 4D ca...

Top Ten 'Worst Remakes' Ever

August 15th, 2011 7:00pm EDT
Fright Night 3D
With the arrival of the less-then-stellar update of the Tom Holland classic "Fright Night 3D" hitting theaters this week, we felt somewhat inspired to sink our own Starpulse film fangs into some equally frightful follow-up flops. Flicks so bad, so crappy and so obviously a ploy to rape the movie-goer of every penny that even the top studio execs still feel a tad dirty from the fallout. (Or maybe not!) So listen up all you cinema slackers out there (yes, even reported "Oldboy" remake filmmakers Steven Spielberg to Spike Lee – shame on all of you!) because below is a hard lesson on why cer...

Review: 'Fright Night 3D' Is The Reason Remakes Get A Bad Name

August 15th, 2011 11:00am EDT
Fright Night 3D photo
Let me preface this review by stating that even though I’m a HUGE fan of the original 1985 Tom Holland five-star horror outing, I’m well aware that even that film lifted ideas from others. ("Rear Window" anyone?!) But as the effective D.J. Caruso remake of sorts called "Disturbia" so defiantly showed, a rehash of ideas can sometimes turn out to be a good thing. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said about the sub-par outing "Fright Night 3D," a terrible excuse to revisit Holland’s work that tries desperately to be daring and different, but ultimately succumbs to copying the original - ba...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'Fright Night,' 'Conan The Barbarian' & More

August 15th, 2011 10:00am EDT
Fright Night
If you missed my interview last week, with Jesse Eisenberg and Nick Swardson for the action comedy “30 Minutes or Less,” definitely check it out. The superbly cast film, which is helmed by “Zombieland” director Ruben Fleischer, is loaded with hilarious pop culture references, entertaining action sequences, and great improvisational humor. If you liked what “Zombieland” did for horror comedies, you’ll love what “30 Minutes or Less” does for the action genre. My Grade: B+

This week is all about 80s remakes with the horror comedy “Fright Night” and the action epic “Conan the Barbarian” hi...

Colin Farrell Gets A Career Do-Over

May 25th, 2011 3:24pm EDT
Colin Farrell
It’s rare in Hollywood for an actor to get a second chance at a career. The most recent example of a career rebirth is Mickey Rourke whose performance in Darren Aronofsky’s “The Wrestler” not only earned him an Oscar nomination, but gave him a new life as a serious and respected actor. In 1994, Quentin Tarantino pulled John Travolta out of the wreckage of his previously successful career and cast him in one of his most iconic roles as the hitman Vincent in “Pulp Fiction.”

Now, Colin Farrell is trying to re-start his career not as the star of mindless action movies (which he quickly became ...

Colin Farrell Teases With His Bare Chest In Dubai - Hot Or Not?

December 20th, 2010 9:43am EST
Colin Farrell
Despite being reportedly sick, Colin Farrell showed off his bare chest while speaking during a 'In Conversation' event at the 7th Annual Dubai International Film Festival in Dubai over the weekend.

Colin stars in the new film "The Way Back" in which a small band of multicultural convicts stages a daring escape from a World War II-era Siberian gulag and embarks on a treacherous journey across five countries in a desperate race for freedom and survival.

He also stars in the upcoming movie "Fright Night 3D" about suburbanite teenager Charley Brewster (Anton Yelchin), who discovers that a vam...
