Although overall FM is nothing more than a mediocre (and thoroughly dishonest) comedy, it does have a certain appeal for those who were in high school in the late 1970s and relish the opportunity of hearing a little vintage Linda Ronstadt or Eagles. It also boasts a pretty decent cast, although none of them are really utilized appropriately or shown off to their best advantage. Martin Mull comes off the best, turning in a performance which, if not galvanizing, is still quite amusing. Eileen Brennan also does very well with the little she is given to play, and Cleavon Little and Michael Brandon try hard. John J. Alonzo's direction is unfocused and lacks pacing. But it's the dishonesty of the picture that works against it the most: the plot is entirely synthetic, not to mention trite and clichéd, and the idea that a radio station could call itself an alternative rock station when it seems to play nothing but singles from mainstream artists such as Boston, Steely Dan, Jimmy Buffett and the Eagles, is laughable. Mind you, the soundtrack is enjoyable; it just isn't appropriate for the kind of station this film is supposed to be about. Craig Butler, Rovi
