Best of 2011 - Jason Coleman's Top Ten Films

12/30/2011 3:20pm EST
The Skin I Live In Photo
2011’s crop of movies had its fare share of interesting ups and downs. On the down side, it’s a year of movies with a ton of potential that for, one reason or another, ended up disappointing due to various bad elements. There were actor/director re-teaming’s brought down by bad casting (Jessica Chastain, terrific in "The Help," proved totally out of place in the Michael Shannon/Jeff Nichols flick "Take Shelter") and annoying characters (wish they could just excise Carey Mulligan’s annoying sister from the Steve McQueen/Michael Fassbender flick "Shame" – and leave the rest!), not to mentio...

'The Help' Once Again Wins Weekend Box Office

8/29/2011 9:22am EDT
The Help
The movie adaptation of Kathyrn Stockett's bestseller "The Help" has scored a second week at the top of the box office.

The movie debuted behind blockbuster "Rise of the Planet of the Apes" when it was released earlier this month, but it has become the sleeper hit of the summer, grossing more than $96 million in America alone.

Thanks mainly to Hurricane Irene on America's east coast, it only earned $14.3 million over the weekend to take the top spot.

Zoe Saldana's new film "Colombiana" is second and the "Planet of the Apes" prequel comes in third.

Debuts from "Don't Be Afraid of the...

Two Jews' Review: 'Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark' Has Illogical Scenes But Seat Jumping Moments

8/25/2011 1:00pm EDT
'Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark'
Two Jews on Film: By Joan Alperin-Schwartz: Take one young, unhappy girl who is sent to live with her busy, preoccupied father and his overly sweet girlfriend, throw in a super big scary gothic mansion with a basement, that has a sealed off fireplace (are there any other kind) and a hundred (give or take) ancient, super ugly, tiny demon like creatures, badly in need of dental work, and you have the film 'Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark'.

This film is written by one of my favorite horror guys, Guillermo del Toro. He wrote the script along with Matthew Robbins and it's directed by newcomer, T...

Katie Holmes Getting 'Scary Skinny' On Raw Vegetable Diet

8/25/2011 10:14am EDT
Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise
Katie Holmes takes losing weight for movies seriously - even if her role doesn't call for it. With Don't be Afraid of the Dark, Holmes has gone on a radical diet that has brought her down to 130 pounds!

A source tells OK!, "When she wants to slim down for a role, she eats only unprocessed raw vegetables. Because of the sugar content, she tries not to eat fruit; if she does, she usually sticks to berries, because they have the lowest glycemic index."

In fact, it's up to her husband Tom Cruise to get her to put pounds back on. "After shooting, Tom will take her out so she can pig out and ...

Review: Horror Of 'Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark' As Hollow As A Hallway

8/23/2011 2:00pm EDT
Don't Photo
There are a few surefire elements that can make a horror film satisfying. The adrenaline rush that comes with good scares, the sight of some lingering blood and guts effects or even characters so complex and real that an audience can’t help but come along for the ride. "Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark" is a rare genre flick with none of the above and don’t let the large print Guillermo del Toro presents banner fool you – comic book artist turned director Troy Nixey gets all the credit for this colossal waste of space.

Young girl Sally moves into a house that is being remodeled by her dad and...

Katie Holmes Looks Magnificent In Magenta

5/24/2011 8:19am EDT
Katie Holmes
Katie Holmes looked stunning in a bright gown as she left her New York City apartment last night. Holmes was photographed earlier in the day flying into New York after visiting her husband Tom Cruise in Miami.

The actress stars in the upcoming film "Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark. Introverted Sally Hurst (Bailee Madison) has just moved in with her father, Alex (Guy Pearce), and his girlfriend, Kim (Holmes), when she realizes that their sprawling estate holds its fair share of secrets.

Descending into the depths of the house, Sally gains access to a secret lower level that has lain undisturb...
