Stage and screen legend Ben Gazzara has died after losing a battle with pancreatic cancer - the same disease that killed his "Road House" co-star Patrick Swayze.

Gazzara, who was 81, died at Bellevue Hospital in Manhattan on Friday.

A native New Yorker, the Emmy winner studied with drama guru Lee Strasberg at the Actors Studio and became a Broadway stage sensation in the 1950s thanks to leading roles in plays like "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof" and "A Hatful of Rain."

Movie great Lauren Bacall has blasted Tom Cruise in a tribute to his ex-wife Nicole Kidman.

Outspoken Bacall reveals her Aussie pal was "unhappy" on the set of their movie Dogville, which Kidman made after splitting from Cruise - and the American great will never forgive the actor for breaking her friend's heart.

Bacall tells Elle magazine, "Tom had taken off for (girlfriend) Penelope Cruz or some goddamn thing - one of his more ridiculous moves. Tom Cruise is a maniac. I can't understand the way he conducts his life."

Nicole Kidman Joins 'The Golden Compass'

Newlywed Nicole Kidman is set to star as Mrs. Coulter in "The Golden Compass," the film version of the first of Philip Pullman's bestselling "His Dark Materials" trilogy. Movie-maker Chris Weitz will direct the $150 million production at London's Shepperton Studios this autumn.

The film is a fantasy about the adventures of a precocious young girl called Lyra Belacqua, who travels to a parallel universe to save her friends who are kidnapped by dark forces. Kidman will play the sinister scholar and socialite with a mysterious past who has a secret link to Lyra.
