Vincent D'Onofrio
Netflix’s Daredevil has cast Vincent D’Onofrio in the role of Wilson Fisk, better known to comic book fans as Kingpin. 11 Controversial Comic Book Movie Castings

March 19th, 2014 1:01pm EDT
Idris Elba
As a comic book nerd, nothing is worse than seeing a poor attempt at a movie adaptation of one of your beloved super heroes. So one could understand why so many casting decisions in comic book films create a controversy. Here are 11 controversial comic book movie castings:

Idris Elba - Heimdall in Thor. In what will be an occurring theme in this list, Elba's casting as Asgard Sentry Heimdall was a controversy only because of the color of this skin. Several white supremacist groups employ Norse mythology, so the perceived slight was twofold for them. In the end, the boycott attempts failed ...

Affleck already tried a more meek superhero role and it was about as welcome as a turd in a swimming pool.  With no muscles, no attitude and simply no character cool, Affleck clearly showed why not everyone can be a superhero.

Five Reasons Ben Affleck Is A Good Choice To Play Batman (And One Really Bad One)

August 25th, 2013 10:01am EDT
Ben Affleck
Friday morning the internet blew up after it was revealed that Ben Affleck was cast in the role of Bruce Wayne/Batman for the 2015 sequel to this summer's blockbuster Superman film, Man of Steel.

Affleck will portray a more aged and wiser Dark Knight opposite Henry Cavill's Superman, and the casting move has been met with lots of backlash.

Producers had to find someone new for the role after Christian Bale revealed he wouldn't portray the character again after last year's The Dark Knight Rises, even reportedly turning down a $50 million offer to put on the Batsuit one more time for a plan...

Matt Damon Was Offered 'Daredevil' Role Before Ben Affleck

January 3rd, 2013 7:58pm EST
Matt Damon
Matt Damon paved the way for Ben Affleck to meet his future wife Jennifer Garner by turning down the titular superhero role in fantasy film Daredevil.

The Good Will Hunting stars met at a young age, travelling with each other to auditions in a bid to launch their movie careers. In their free time, the pair read Marvel Comics and several years later Damon was offered the chance to don the iconic red Daredevil suit for a 2003 big screen adaption.

The hunk declined, and casting directors then turned to Affleck, who accepted the part and went on to fall in love with his co-star Garner.

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies -'When in Rome,' 'Edge of Darkness' & More

January 25th, 2010 10:59am EST
Edge of Darkness
I took a break from the movies last week, since nothing in theaters was particularly calling out to me as worthwhile. Instead I saw a release on video I wanted to catch: the new "Family Guy" "Star Wars" parody "Something Something Something Dark Side." I found "Dark Side" to be pretty hilarious, although perhaps not quite as novel as "Blue Harvest." As a lifelong "Star Wars" fan, I've always had an appreciation for shows and movies that deftly lampoon the series.

This last week in January Kristen Bell portrays a workaholic skeptical about love in the romantic comedy "When in Rome," Me...

Greatest Entertainers of the Decade
This week, we've brought you the Ten Greatest TV Shows, Songs, Albums and Movies of the Decade. Now it's time to roll it all into one with the Ten Greatest Entertainers of the Decade.

This was a decade where entertainment became increasingly fractured. With 500 channels 500 bazillion websites and every medium on-demand, bringing together any significant chunk of people to one thing was a true sign of greatness. In an era when nobody had to agree - making them agree took something beyond the level of entertainer we saw in the past.

With that in mind, here are the Ten Greatest Entert...

Today is the 70th anniversary of Marvel comics, and I thought as a geek it would only be fair to dedicate this week's column to them. All over the country there are going to be parties for Marvel so if you'd like to find one in your area, check their website for a list of participating locations. There will be special Barnes & Noble meetings too in specific cities where famous Marvel writers, editors, and artists will appear for Q&A sessions and sign autographs.

Marvel Comics was founded by Martin Goodman, and it was originally called Timely Publications in 1939. He was already publishi...

Everything Geeky - Give Female Superheroes A Chance!

August 4th, 2009 2:25pm EDT
Wonder Woman
At the San Diego Comic Con I was speaking with Michael Jelenic, the writer of the recent animated movie "Wonder Woman," and we were lamenting that the film did not do quite as well as everyone hoped. Even with the positive critical response and excellent promotion, it just didn't get the high sell numbers fans were waiting for, although it did moderately well overall.

The reason I personally watched closely was because without proving that a female superhero can sell DVDs and toys, it is unlikely we'll see very much more of it in the mass media. They mostly sold the movies Elektra and C...

Review: A Fan's Reaction to 'Watchmen'

March 5th, 2009 11:09am EST
Watchmen
I grew up in a comic book store, so most of my days after school were spent sitting in a beanbag chair reading graphic novels. It has been a fairly exciting few years for comic fans with the emergence of the mainstream embracing what used to be considered a nerdy habit. With big blockbuster movies like Spider-Man, X-Men, and The Dark Knight taking over the Entertainment industry, it is easier to forgive bad comic movies like Catwoman or Daredevil because at least they're getting these stories out there. At least people are starting to know and love what we've known and loved for decades. Ye...

It is widely acknowledged that workplace romances are a definite no-no; clearly, some famous actors and actresses didn't get the memo. DC Movies vs Marvel Movies: Which Are Better?

After months of anticipation the two candidates are finally ready to square of against one another. There has quite possibly never been such a sharp contrast the American public has to choose between. One candidate possesses the mind of an intellectual while the other uses gut instincts. One maintains a trim and chiseled physique and the other uses brute strength to get his point across. One is a relative newcomer that was born in the early 1960's while one has a long and storied history having been born in the late 1930's. Are we talking about Barack Obama and John McCain? Well… I suppose ...

Famous June Brides: Happily Ever After?

June 3rd, 2008 8:30am EDT
Nicole Kidman & Keith Urban
Historically, some married in the month of June to honor Juno, the Roman goddess of marriage. Others did it to time conception so births wouldn't interfere with harvest work. Brides in the 15th century chose to marry in June because it coincided with their "annual bath" - you read right - thus ensuring a relatively sweet-smelling honeymoon.

Centuries later, June has remained the most popular month to wed. In MGM's 1954 Academy Award-winning musical, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers the song "June Bride" trills: "Oh, they say when you marry in June, you're a bride all your life."

Video Games Do Not Make Good Movies

There are some things in Hollywood that just do not work: Lindsay Lohan and sobriety, most marriages, Tim Allen tackling roles not involving Christmas, and successfully adapting a video game into a movie. Why is this so hard?

The powers that be can take a 700-page book and trim it down to a two-hour story. Either they are picking really bad video games to adapt or the people involved just suck. There has yet to be a quality adaptation. So why do studios keep insisting on producing them? They even screwed up Doom, a story that involves Marines fighting aliens. How is that even possible...
