Former pro-surfer Jack Johnson has another surprise album hit on his hands - his Curious George soundtrack has shot to the top of the US charts. The reluctant superstar's companion album to the new family film, Sing-a-longs & Lullabies, sold 163,000 copies in the US in its first week on release to claim the top spot.

Steve Martin's portrayal of Inspector Clouseau in The Pink Panther pounced to the top of the box office with a $21.7 million in its opening weekend. The remake of the 1963 comedy classic opened to mixed reviews but was able to sneak past horror film Final Destination 3, which grossed $20.1 million.

Two men have been charged with the first-degree murder of Curious George co-author Alan J. Shalleck in Florida. The 76-year-old writer was found stabbed to death under a pile of garbage bags outside his home in Boynton Beach on Tuesday. Police found a trail of blood leading from Shalleck's body to his trailer home and found blood splattered all over the master bedroom, as well several knives and broken glass.

The co-creator of the Curious George cartoons has died in Florida just days before the feature film version of his TV show hits cinemas. Alan Shalleck, 76, was found dead outside his home on Tuesday. Police are treating the death as a possible homicide.
