Are Film Remakes Worth The Risk?

October 8th, 2009 10:37am EDT
Fame
In these tough economic times, film studios are producing more and more remakes. Though some cite the financial insecurity of the viewing public, many simply argue that there is just no originality anymore, and why take a risk on a "new" idea when you can simply bring back what has since become a cult classic?

All films can be considered risks, however, especially when "date night" at the movies takes a middle class couple's expendable income. Not one of the top 10 films at the box office this summer was a remake. Perhaps that is because these new-old movies have versions sitting on Blo...

'Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs' Isn't Deep, But It's Entertaining

September 16th, 2009 11:16am EDT
Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs
An animated film described as "a kids movie that the parents will enjoy" is becoming a bit of a hackneyed characterization. Really, what animated film in 2009 isn't described like that? And lately it's not even true. Are "Wall-E" and "Up" really kids films? Wouldn't it be better to describe those films as "parent films that kids will enjoy ?"

The underlying messages in recent Pixar films are too broad to ignore or simply write off as kid films. Is it even possible to have a children's film today without some deep-seated communiqué about saving the planet? Enter "Cloudy With a Chance of ...

Q&A: Bill Hader On His First Leading Role 'Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs'

September 16th, 2009 9:37am EDT
Bill Hader
"Knocked Up," "SuperBad," Hot Rod," "Forgetting Sarah Marshall," "Tropic Thunder," "The Pineapple Express, Adventureland." All films -- released just in the last two years -- featuring (obviously, from the title of this post) "Saturday Night Live" star Bill Hader. Bill Hader now takes on his first leading role, sort of, as wayward inventor Flint Lockwood in the new 3-D animated feature, "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs." Hader, in this one on one interview, discusses with us the challenges of voice over work, his recent success in films as a supporting character and how all of this would ...

Bill Hader & Anna Faris Talk Food And 'Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs'

September 14th, 2009 10:45am EDT
Bill Hader And Anna Faris
If there's one constant pleasure in this world -- one eency weency morsel of unadulterated delight that can bring happiness to this at times cruel and barren planet -- it's this: movies about food. Why, you may ask? Imagine the hottest of summer days days, caked in the salt your own dried sweat while breathing the toxic fumes of hundreds of New York City taxi cabs. For what? So you can wait hours just to get the perfect quote at a press conference that really captures the essence of the new reboot of the "Mannequin" franchise (oh, you know it's coming!). Or trudging through twelve inches of...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'The Informant,' 'Jennifer's Body' & More

September 14th, 2009 9:32am EDT
The Informant
Last week, the long weekend gave me a chance to see "District 9" in the movie theater. The film's science fiction elements took a back seat to its moral objective however, which was roughly to serve as an allegory for the Apartheid in South Africa.

Treatment of the aliens by humans, as a subhuman species really becomes emotionally jarring through the intense blood and gore that comprise the latter half of the movie. Audiences ultimately walk away from "District 9" disgusted by the inhumanity of the human race.

A nontraditional narrative, "District 9" is largely told through the use ...

Previewing The Movies: Fall 2009

2009 Fall Movie Previews
With summer coming to an end, there's one major thing to consider: what's going to be entertaining for the next three months? We assume you're thinking the same thing (great minds being alike and all), so here's the rundown of what Hollywood has coming:

Gamer (09/04/09)

Director: Mark Neveldine, Brian Taylor

Starring: Gerard Butler, Michael C. Hall

Gamer will be one of the coolest movies of the season because it actually manages to bring a fairly new concept to the action genre. In the near future, with mind control technology pretty much commonplace, billionaire Ken Castle (Michael...
