WASHINGTON (AP) - Billy Crystal will be awarded the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor. He's the 10th recipient of the award, given annually by the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. It'll be presented Oct. 11 at a tribute performance that will be televised by PBS.

Country singer Janette Carter, of cuuntry music's founding family, the Carters, 82 (1/22); and actor Chris Penn, 40, brother of actor Sean Penn who starred in Quentin Tarantino's Reservoir Dogs (1/24). And Coretta Scott King (76), civil rights activist and wife of Martin Luther King, Jr (1/30).

Oscar-winning actor Jack Palance died yesterday at his home in Montecito, California. He was 87. The City Slickers star died of natural causes and was surrounded by his family when he passed away, according to his spokesperson Dick Guttman.
