Blu-ray Interview/Review: Larry The Cable Guy (AKA Mater!) On Hitting The Road Again For 'Cars 2'

November 1st, 2011 4:00pm EDT
Larry The Cable Guy (aka Mater!)
Known far and wide by adults for his hilarious stand up work via the famed 'Blue Collar Comedy Tour,' Larry the Cable Guy also cornered the kid market with the inspired voicing of lovable tow truck Mater in Pixar’s "Cars" franchise. As the goofy and rusty sidekick to Owen Wilson’s slick Lightning McQueen, Larry helped create one of the most beloved and memorable characters in the Pixar universe. Now the Mater heavy sequel "Cars 2" is hitting DVD and Blu-ray (streets Nov. 1 from Disney Home Entertainment) - featuring the sassy truck and best friend McQueen heading for Japan and Europe for ...

'Transformers' Sequel Crushes Competition At Box Office

July 4th, 2011 2:30pm EDT
Transformers Dark of the Moon
Shia Labeouf's "Transformers: Dark Of The Moon" has destroyed the competition at the box office, grossing $97.4 million to score the biggest opening weekend of the year so far.

The third installment of the action franchise, directed by Michael Bay, opened on Tuesday night and had pulled in $162 million by Sunday, according to early studio estimates.

Its weekend gross of $97.4 million beats the $90.2 million taken by Disney's "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" when it was released in May.

The Transformers sequel also makes history as the largest Independence Day weekend draw si...

"Cars 2" a Cynical Clunker

June 26th, 2011 11:19am EDT
Cars 2
For the last five years, Pixar has been on quite a roll, churning out one reliably solid animated film every summer. The last four have won Oscars for Best Animated Feature, and the last three (WALL-E, Up, and Toy Story 3) are, in my mind, stone cold classics. This winning streak and reputation for quality are what make Pixar's latest, "Cars 2," not just disappointing, but puzzling.

The hero of the first "Cars" film, a race car voiced by Owen Wilson, returns to Radiator Springs to spend some time with his best friend Mater, aka Larry the Cable Guy. If there's any time left over, he might ...

Owen Wilson Remembers Paul Newman Making 'Cars'

June 24th, 2011 5:00pm EDT
Cars
Owen Wilson returns as the voice of Lightning McQueen in Cars 2. Unfortunately, since the original Cars, Paul Newman passed away. He was the voice of Doc, and Doc is now gone from the world of Radiator Springs. Wilson remembered his costar fondly while promoting the sequel.

“On the first one I did get to work one day with Paul Newman,” Wilson said. “We went to New York and got to record with him and it was great. He actually had some questions about, 'I don't know if this would really...' because he was so knowledgeable about racing. And then John [Lasseter] took what he was saying and wen...

Review: 'Cars 2' 'Two Jews On Film' Celebrate Their 100th And Drive In Opposite Directions (Video)

June 23rd, 2011 10:12am EDT
Cars 2
By Joan Alperin Schwartz: 'Cars 2' is the new 3D wonder from director John Lasseter. John and his crew at Pixar have once again proven why they are the best at what they do.

To really enjoy this film, you have to put aside any ideas that cars can't talk, can't have friends and girlfriends, can't experience human emotions and can't be killer spies. (Something the other half of Two Jews On Film, John my husband, wasn't able to do).

Anyway, the story goes like this...Lightning McQueen (Owen Wilson) is the snazzy, red, highly acclaimed racing car. After winning four Pisto...

Trailer Talk: This Week In Movies - 'Cars 2,' 'Bad Teacher' & More

June 20th, 2011 2:00pm EDT
Cars 2
The long-awaited superhero flick “Green Lantern” was a huge disappointment last week. Normally I love Ryan Reynolds for his smug sarcasm and his lovable slacker type characters, but not even he could save this exercise in superficial storytelling. If you haven’t already read it, check out my review, for my complete thoughts.

Arriving in theaters this week are the Disney Pixar sequel “Cars 2,” the R-rated Cameron Diaz comedy “Bad Teacher,” and the Los Angeles drama “A Better Life.” I will be attending a screening of “Bad Teacher,” so definitely watch out for a review later in the week. ...

British Screenwriter Sues Over 'Cars'

March 22nd, 2011 8:55am EDT
Cars
A British screenwriter is taking legal action in a bid to stop Disney bosses releasing the upcoming sequel to hit animated film Cars, alleging they stole the original movie's concept from his work in the 1990s.

Jake Mandeville-Anthony has filed a lawsuit against studio chiefs at Disney and Pixar, claiming the 2006 box office hit is based on two screenplays which he submitted to a number of production companies back in 1993.

He allegedly created Cookie & Co., based on the experiences of real life racing driver Michael Owen Perkins, and a second screenplay called Cars, which included anim...

Paul Newman Tribute Planned for 'Cars 2'

March 2nd, 2011 10:04pm EST
Cars
The Cars sequel will feature a touching tribute to late movie icon Paul Newman, who voiced the role of Doc Hudson in the 2006 original.

Newman's car character will not appear in the new movie, but Newman and Doc will be honored, according to director John Lasseter.

He tells the Los Angeles Times' 24 Frames blog, "We have a lovely tribute to Paul in the movie, but we didn't feel it would be right to include him or the character."

Newman's Hudson was a former champion racecar before a terrible accident ended its career. He became a doctor, life coach and elder of Radiator Springs - the for...
