The Ten Worst Movies Of 2013

December 24th, 2013 12:00pm EST
Getaway
What makes a bad film? Factors such as poor ticket sales, bad acting, lousy scripts, and negative reviews. And if you've never even heard of the movie, than you know it's really bad.

Some of these films actually had decent box office results, but that doesn't mean they were good films. It just means a bunch of people got suckered into watching movies they thought would be entertaining but ended up being lousy.

"Getaway" (above) starred Selena Gomez, one of today's hottest young female singers and actresses. But her star power couldn't save the film.

The movie centered on Brent (Ethan Haw...

Box Office Predictions: 'Ender's Game' or Will 'Free Birds' Fly?

October 31st, 2013 8:00pm EDT
Ender's Game
1) Ender's Game- 25M Weekend, 25M Total

My gut instinct is that Enders Game is going to disappoint this weekend. Adobe started tracking social media responses to upcoming films, and singled Enders Game out as one of the films most likely to crash and burn this season. I’m going to lowball this, but other prognosticators think this can do over 30M.

2) Free Birds- 22M Weekend, 22M Total

I see a lot of low numbers for Free Birds, but the marketplace is very largely adult right now. Even Enders Game doesn’t feel like a kids movie, so I don’t know if families will flock to it or not. November...

Box Office Predictions: ‘Bad Grandpa’ Will Make An Impact

October 25th, 2013 10:42pm EDT
Jackass Presents: Bad Grandpa
1) Bad Grandpa- 35M Weekend, 35M Total

Entering into a rather serious Top 10 is Bad Grandpa, which is looking to draw in an underserved comedy audience. Specifically, the young male comedy audience. This strategy has worked well for the Jackass films in the past. Jackass 3D opened to 50M, Jackass 2 did 29M. Bad Grandpa is tracking well, and will dominate due to a lack of direct competition.

2) Gravity- 21M Weekend, 200M Total

Gravity is looking to crack 200M this weekend. Another 30% drop to 21M will put it in striking distance. A pretty amazing feat for a film in October, starring only ...

NYC Coffee House Customers Freak Out In Viral Promotion For 'Carrie' Remake (Watch It!)

October 9th, 2013 9:39am EDT
Carrie Coffee Shop 1
A coffee house in New York City was recently transformed to promote the remake of classic Stephen King horror flick Carrie, which stars Chloe Moretz and Julianne Moore and hits theaters October 18.

Unsuspecting patrons were caught off guard when a customer spills coffee all over a girl's laptop (both actors) and she flips out, sending him flying with her apparent telekinetic powers.

Customer reactions were all caught on camera, and they're all as classic as the first film.

The now viral video was set up by marketing company Thinkmodo, and starts out by revealing the whole setup, and know...

Interview: P.J. Soles Talks 35 Years of 'Halloween'

September 24th, 2013 10:20am EDT
Halloween
First off I have to make a confession – I have deep childhood love for Riff Randell.  The perky, spirited and altogether rebellious teen ala the Roger Corman classic "Rock ‘n’ Roll High School" was a big part of the adolescence of yours truly.  So imagine my joy at the opportunity to chat one-on-one with the uber-cool actress that brought her to life P.J. Soles – a dream come true.  The event that brought us together is none other than the new stunning transfer Blu-ray "Halloween: 35th Anniversary Edition" (out Sept. 24 from Anchor Bay Entertainment) where of course P.J. plays the sassy Lyn...

Chloe Grace Moretz Stars In Remake Of Stephen King's 'Carrie' - Check Out The First Trailer

April 5th, 2013 4:05pm EDT
Carrie
The first official trailer for this fall's remake of Carrie has been released; and so far it looks a lot like the 1976 original -- cruel teen girls, bullying, and, of course, lots of pig blood.

Chloe Grace Moretz stars as the titular telekinetic teen in this modern update of Stephen King's 1974 horror novel, stepping into the role that made Sissy Spacek famous.

Julianne Moore stars as Carrie's mom, Margaret White, an overly religious, shut-in who believes that Carrie is possessed by the devil after learning of her telekinetic powers. Piper Laurie starred as Carrie's mom in the original.

Chloe Moretz
Chloe Grace Moretz is getting hands-on as she prepares to star in a remake of classic horror film "Carrie" - she's designing her own costume for the movie.

The actress, 15, will portray possessed teenager Carrie White in the chilling tale, taking on the part made famous by a young Sissy Spacek in director Brian De Palma's 1976 adaptation of the Stephen King novel.

Production on the project doesn't begin until June 1, but Moretz has been keeping busy creating her character's outfit to wear in the film's key prom scene, in which Carrie wreaks havoc with her supernatural powers.

She tells E...

'Twilight Zone' Episodes That Should Be Made Into Movies

November 6th, 2009 10:00am EST
The Box
This weekend Cameron Diaz and James Marsden star in the suspense thriller "The Box," but what not many people know is that the movie is based on an episode of "The Twilight Zone." It was originally taken from a short story written by Richard Matheson, and the movie might follow the TV episode or the original Matheson script; you'll just have to see the movie to find out. Still, it started us thinking on "The Twilight Zone" and how some of the most memorable episodes could surely be lengthened into full length features. The stories are scary, sad, odd, fantastical, and tragic; just the kind ...

Sleepaway Camp (1983): It Has A Weirdly Surbersive Gay Vibe

"Sleepaway Camp" is a strange movie. In essence, it's nothing more than a cheap, by-the-numbers Friday the 13th knock-off, but while the two movies are identical in setting, time p...

Unrealistic Prom Scenes On Film

May 27th, 2009 2:22pm EDT
Carrie
It's called by many names in cinema, but the big high school dance, the one where Cinderellas step out in glass slippers and the ugly ducklings start singing their swan songs, is generally known as Prom. They take place everywhere from gymnasiums to four-star hotels, but frequently end in drunkenness and frustrated hopes of losing one's virginity. Here are few examples of Prom Nights that give high school juniors and seniors everywhere unrealistic expectations, and what you can learn from them:

Carrie. Based on Stephen King's novel, this classic horror film teaches us not to make...

Our Favorite High School Movies

The Breakfast Club
Perhaps you've heard about "Assassination of a High School President," the Bruce Willis/Mischa Barton movie that darkly satirizes high school politics. While much of the high school set is eagerly anticipating the film's theatrical release in early 2009, early reviews from its January screening at Sundance have been mixed. MTV has praised it as a cross between "Rushmore" and "The Usual Suspects," while Variety labeled it an "uninventive," "muddled parody." Only time will tell if the movie becomes an instant classic or ends up in the bargain DVD bin next to "Encino Man."

There has been...

May 20th, 2008 11:17am EDT
The Bourne Ultimatum
Many filmmakers are taking on the challenge of turning classic novels into feature films. It's a challenge because many people have fallen in love with the books and don't want directors messing with them. There are many books that were translated poorly on the big screen, but there are films that are just as good as the book, if not better.

In no particular order, here is a look at some of the best and worst films that are based off books:

March was filled with a plethora of great films. April Fools. Still, it finished stronger than it started with Run Fatboy Run and 21, which is still gathering steam and threatening to be a player this month as well. April is looking to pick up right where "21" leaves off. It even features another numbered film, 88 Minutes. What's not to like?

This Friday, Leatherheads boasts George Clooney's first direction since he flirted with Oscar for Goodnight and Goodluck. The cast is star studded - no shocker there, since Clooney once again stars in his own feature. He brings along fellow Academ...
