Fans Hit Back After Disney's 'Frozen' Lead Animator Calls Female Characters 'Difficult'

10/10/2013 4:07pm EDT
Disney has a princess problem. After catching some flack over the years for their depiction of women in their animated films, one of their lead animators has created another controversy with his latest comments.

While talking to Fan Voice's Jenna Busch, head of Animation on the film Frozen Lino Disalvo had some questionable comments. "Historically speaking, animating female characters are really, really difficult, 'cause they have to go through these range of emotions, but they’re very, very — you have to keep them pretty and they’re very sensitive to — you can get them off a model very qu...

80s Nostalgia, Pirates! & Frankenweenies: Which Film Will Win The Oscar For Best Animated Feature?

2/24/2013 2:30pm EST
The Pirates! Band of Misfits
Two years after winning this Oscar for Toy Story 3, Disney's back in the mix with not one, but two animated features amongst the five nominees in the category.

The studio will have better odds of winning -- but it's not a question of if one of their two films will win, it's a question of which one will win.

The clear choice here is Wreck-It Ralph, the highly nostagic story of a retro, 80s-style video game bad guy who just wants to be a good guy.

There should be little competition from the two Halloween-themed films: Tim Burton's lacking Frankenweenie and the equally 'meh' ParaNorman.

Number-one Pixar film "Brave" arrives on Blu-ray, DVD, on demand and more on Tuesday, Nov. 13. In the film, an impetuous princess discovers that her reckless choice has put both her family and her father's kingdom.

As a toddler, Merida (voice of Kelly MacDonald) saw her father, King Fergus (Billy Connolly), do battle with one of the fiercest animals in the kingdom - a horribly scarred hulk of a bear named Mordu. Though Fergus lost his leg defending his family, Merida and her mother, Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson), managed to escape the beast before it vanished back into the forest.

'Spider-Man' Takes Top Spot At Box Office; Doesn't Do As Well As Predecessors

The Amazing Spider-Man
Earning $65 million, "The Amazing Spider-Man" swung into first place at the box office over the weekend. The film, starring Andrew Garfield and Emma Stone, opened to positive reviews on Tuesday and made a record-breaking $7.5 million in midnight ticket sales.

The film earned a total of $140 million over its six-day opening, less than the three previous films from the franchise. The first "Spider-Man" (2002) made $144.2 million in its six-day start, and "Spider-Man 2" (2004) made $180.1 million. "Spider-Man 3" (2007) took home a respectable $176.2 million.

Mark Wahlberg's Foul-Mouthed 'Ted' Breaks Box Office Records

7/2/2012 9:00am EDT
Mark Wahlberg's new movie "Ted," about a foul-mouthed teddy bear, stunned Hollywood by taking in $54.1 million over the weekend. The film debuted at number one and broke "The Hangover's" box office record for the biggest R-rated opening in the United States.

Wahlberg plays John Bennett, who as a little boy is granted a wish - his beloved teddy bear Ted (voice of Seth MacFarlane) comes to life. As an adult, John wrestles with the lingering consequences.

At number two at the box office was stripper flick "Magic Mike," starring hotties Channing Tatum, Alex Pettyfer, Joe Manganiello and Ma...

Could Mark Wahlberg's 'Ted' Take The Top Spot At The Weekend Box Office?

6/29/2012 9:43am EDT
Pixar's "Brave" opened strong last weekend with $66.3 million in ticket sales, and opinion is divided as to how much it will earn this weekend, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

If the animated film earns 50 percent less, $33 million, the comedy "Ted" could usurp the top spot. The film, by "Family Guy" creator Seth MacFarlane, centers on a man (Mark Wahlberg) who wrestles with the lingering consequences of a childhood wish - making a teddy bear come to life.

Also opening this weekend is the highly buzzed about stripper film "Magic Mike," starring Channing Tatum, Matthew McConaughey, A...

'Brave' Star Didn't Know She Was Pixar's First Princess Hero

6/25/2012 1:06pm EDT
It’s no surprise that the latest Pixar movie Brave became the number one movie in America last weekend. What’s surprising is that it is a princess tale, more akin to the classic Disney films than the modern Pixar ones. This fact was lost on its star, the voice of Princess Merida, Kelly Macdonald.

“Attention to detail is not my strong point and it quickly passed me by that I was going to be the first female protagonist in a Pixar movie until quite recently,” Macdonald said. “I’m kind of glad that I didn’t know what I was doing, because it would have been a lot of pressure. I don’t think I p...

'Brave' Easily Wins Weekend Box Office, 'End Of The World' Disappoints

6/25/2012 8:09am EDT
Unsurprisingly, Pixar animated film "Brave" ruled the box office over the weekend, taking in $66.7 million. The film is the 13th-straight Pixar release to open at number one since "Toy Story" was released in 1995.

"Brave," which features the first female lead in the company's history, centers on an impetuous princess named Merida (played by Scottish actress Kelly Macdonald) who discovers that a choice she makes puts both her family and her father's kingdom in peril.

The film bumped animated film "Madagascar 3: Europe's Most Wanted" to the number two slot on the weekend countdown. It too...

Trailer Talk: 'Brave,' 'Seeking a Friend for the End of the World,' & 'Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter'

Brave Poster
Last week I was pretty busy watching movies. I saw Adam Shankman’s musical “Rock of Ages,” Colin Trevorrow’s dramedy “Safety Not Guaranteed,” and Ridley Scott’s sci-fi/horror flick “Prometheus.” I largely thought Tom Cruise’s robotic performance ruined “Rock of Ages,” and “Safety Not Guaranteed” was enjoyable, but only when it stuck to the time travel elements in its story. For more of my thoughts on those two films, check out my reviews.

Although I didn’t love Ridley Scott’s “Prometheus,” I didn’t exactly hate it either. The special effects are superb and there are a few truly horrifying ...

Can 'Avengers,' 'Dark Knight Rises,' And 'Amazing Spider-Man' Make 2012 The Best Movie Summer Ever?

5/2/2012 2:07pm EDT
The Avengers
The movie industry earned $4.3 billion last summer at the U.S. box office to make it the best summer ever (I thought piracy was killing the industry?) but don't expect the mark to last for long. There's a team of superhero movies coming along, and each one could break records.

The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers look to score over $400 million each and should be boosted with IMAX and 3D premiums. Thus far, The Avengers have already made $218 million overseas. There's also PIXAR's Brave and The Amazing Spider-Man - Pixar is always good for a cash infusion, but we'll have to wait and see ...

Disney/Pixar's 'Brave' Set To Release 2012

6/27/2011 10:04am EDT
Disney/Pixar’s collaborations are known to be heartwarming and cheerful, films that are cherished by the entire family. Only one film is released by the partnership each year, and what 2012 has in store is going to be quite a departure from their typical repertoire.

Set to release July 22, 2012, “Brave” is centered around a Scottish princess, Merida, who brings trouble to her kingdom and sets out on a journey accompanied by the kingdom's three lords to restore peace.

What sets this film apart from previous ones is the seemingly darker quality that is present. Unlike the lighter moods ...
