'Blue Valentine' Director Condemns Hollywood Gun Violence As 'Fetishized'

April 18th, 2013 4:35pm EDT
Derek Cianfrance
Derek Cianfrance director of the 2010 Sundance hit, Blue Valentine has publicly announced his distaste for Hollywood's use of excessive graphic violence, calling moviemakers "irresponsible" for portraying onscreen use of guns as "cool."

Constant debate has raged over how guns are, or should be, portrayed in movies, sparked by the tragedy that happened in Newtown, Conn., last December when 20 children and six adults died after they were gunned down at the Sandy Hook elementary school. Since then, politicians and many others have taken  sides on the reignited gun control debate - a debate t...

How Ryan Gosling Resurrected The Movie Star

September 14th, 2011 11:00am EDT

Movie critics, driven to understandable cynicism by the onslaught of unnecessary remakes (there is no reason for another "Footloose") and re-imaginings of every superhero from the Green Lantern to a hammer-wielding Norse god, have declared the movie star extinct.  I think the stellar year actor Ryan Gosling, 30, is having is inspiring proof that the existence of the movie star in this entertainment climate is still possible.

For this lover of pop culture, a movie star is more than someone who makes a lot of films and walks a lot of red carpets.  It’s Julia Roberts in “Pretty Woman,” “Th...

Some Very Hot On-Screen Pairings

July 23rd, 2011 8:30am EDT
Friends With Benefits
In honor of Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis’ new movie Friends With Benefits, we thought we’d take a look at other hot on-screen couples. It’s hard enough to look at Mila Kunis without getting completely jealous of her looks (girls) or getting turned on (guys), but pair her with uber-hottie Justin Timberlake and it’s almost too much for the silver screen. Here are a few more hot couples that were paired together to create some “good looking” films.

Dirty Dancing- What do you get when you add Patrick Swayze in tights, a few watermelons and Jennifer Grey’s gyrating hips? Dancing that is alm...

The Oscar Nominations: Surprises, Snubs And Flubs

January 25th, 2011 10:48pm EST
The King's Speech
As reported earlier, the Oscar nominations were announced this morning. As in recent years, everything went according to plan. There were a few surprise inclusions, but most of them weren’t shocking. And the snubs weren’t too surprising either.

‘The King’s Speech’ led with 12 nominations, more than most predicted. ‘True Grit’ was close behind with a strong 10 – an astonishing turnaround from its ridiculous zero nominations at the Golden Globes – while ‘The Social Network’ trailed with a somewhat disappointing 8 nominations.

Joel and Ethan Coen of ‘True Grit’ likely edged out Christo...

As part of yearly tradition, my family watched our good old VHS copy of “A Christmas Story.” It amazes me how this film has become so ingrained in our popular culture, and that it’s shown for 24 hours straight on TNT. Often I can’t believe that I can watch it every year without tiring of it, but I tend to keep a sentimen...
