Broadway Adaptation Of Tim Burton's 'Big Fish' To Close In December

November 11th, 2013 11:42am EST
Big Fish
Just three months after making its Broadway debut, the stage adaptation of Tim Burton's Big Fish is set to close.

Burton's film, which came out in 2003 and starred Albert Finney and Ewan McGregor, was adapted from Daniel Wallace's 1998 novel of the same name. Earlier this year it was written for the stage with five-time Tony winner Susan Stroman at the helm.

Unfortunately, the play hasn't performed well and falling box office sales have led to the decision to close the production down at the end of the year.

The production cost close to $14 million to produce and the final performance of...

Writer's Viewpoint: Tim Burton Has Become A Fad Disguised As Art

August 19th, 2009 10:40am EDT
Tim Burton
I'm not against fads per se, but this Tim Burton mess bothers me. It's not the kind of harmless era-defining fad that jelly bracelets and scrunchies were in the 80s, and it's certainly not as subtle as Apple's catchy use of the lower-case "i."

Since the turn of the new millennium, Tim Burton has emerged as a kind of self-perpetuating cultural organism, eating other fads and franchises as it grows overstuffed and unable to control its own ego. And now it might be too late for us to do anything about it. It's like a monster straight out of, well - a Tim Burton film.

The kind of people...

'Watchmen's' Dr. Manhattan Won't Call His Movie 'Priceless'

February 23rd, 2009 12:38pm EST
Billy Crudup
Billy Crudup has starred in many films like Almost Famous, Big Fish and the upcoming Watchmen. However, you would most recognize his voice. As the voice of Mastercard, he names the priceless events that the credit card cannot buy.

As much as he loves Watchmen, he's not about to use his trademark line to shill the movie. "I don't think they have the money to pay me to declare this movie priceless," Crudup joked. "I'm not even sure if I'm allowed to say that word. I think I am."

The film is based on the landmark 1984 graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. A group of superher...

Movies With Heart: The 100 Best 'Romdramedies' Of The Past 20 Years

April 17th, 2008 8:00am EDT
Clueless
There's the quintessential romantic comedy, and then there's the romdramedy. Similar to a dramedy (in which there is an equal balance of humor and serious content), a romdramedy combines comedy and drama with that mushy thing we call romance.

This is not a list of the best films over the past 20 years. Rather it is a list that gives preferences to those films that best combine all three elements - romance, comedy and drama.

Films like Magnolia and The Matrix were barred from competition, while films like Down with Love were considered (however, that one didn't make the cut)....

Turning Twenty: A Look Back At 1988's 'Beetlejuice'

March 31st, 2008 4:06pm EDT
Beetlejuice
Half "Bloody Mary" and half decomposing sleezeball, Beetlejuice is the titular anti-hero that helped put Tim Burton into the who's who of Hollywood. Now at its 20th anniversary, let's take a look back at a sparkling example of dark comedy that stands as a precursor to Burton's magical films.

The Movie

Reading the cast list will illicit at least one "oh yeah, he/she was in this" reaction. The ensemble would also make a 1990s romantic comedy cast director salivate: Michael Keaton, Alec Baldwin, Geena Davis, Winona Ryder, Catherine O'Hara, an appearance by the late Robert Goulet, and...

Claire Danes
Claire Danes has been in therapy for 20 years. The stunning actress, who is dating 'Big Fish' star Billy Crudup, claims she enjoys getting psychological help - but admits it makes her more of an emotional person.

She confessed: "It's just a great resource. I don't keep a journal, so I go to therapy. I enjoy it and I get a lot out of it. Although, if I weren't in therapy, I'd probably be a lot more together. My therapist is always encouraging me to be a little sloppier and more honest and expressive."

Claire has revealed one of the main issues she discusses with her therapist is he...
