'Buffy The Vampire Slayer' Named The Greatest Cult TV Series

7/27/2012 9:17am EDT
Buffy The Vampire Slayer
Fans just can't get enough of vampires. Today it's "Twilight," but not too long ago it was "Buffy The Vampire Slayer," which tops a new magazine list of the 25 Best Cult TV Shows from the past 25 years.

The Joss Whedon-helmed series ran for 144 episodes between March 1997 and May 2003, and is number one on Entertainment Weekly's new poll. The show was a mixture of drama, comedy, romance, action, and horror.

"Buffy" centered on the exploits of its titular vampire slayer, a mystical "Chosen One" living in Sunnydale, Calif., an idyllic small town situated atop the mouth to hell. Buffy (Sarah...

Michael Trucco: 'Fairly Legal's' Secret Weapon

3/16/2012 2:00pm EDT
Michael Trucco
USA's Fairly Legal returns for its second season tonight with one big ace up its sleeve: co-star Michael Trucco.

When is a series regular a secret weapon? When he's doing fantastic work and still playing second chair. Yes, Fairly Legal belongs to the character of Kate Reed (Sarah Shahi), but there's something about her not quite ex-husband that sticks.

As played by Trucco, Justin Patrick is that hard-working, dedicated Assistant District Attorney that you'd want fighting for you in court, and he's also the voice of reason in his complicated relationship with Kate. In a conventional legal ...

Q&A: Shawn Doyle Plays A Brilliant 'Endgame'

1/9/2012 2:05pm EST
Can you solve crimes without ever leaving one building? That's the idea behind Endgame, a Canadian series that gets a second life on Hulu starting today.

In Endgame, veteran actor Shawn Doyle (Big Love, 24, Lie To Me) plays Russian chess champion Arkady Balagan, who's confined himself to a hotel after witnessing the murder of his fiancee. Arkady is both brilliant and difficult, but when he's convinced to apply his powers of observation to the disappearance of a young boy, he finds another use for his amazing talent. With the help of hotel staff and a grad student, Arkady tackles a ...

'Dexter' Recap: 'A Horse of a Different Color' (6.04)

10/23/2011 9:08pm EDT
If last week's Dexter was more of a standalone episode, this week's throws us right back into the season-long arc, inducing squirms and gasps in equal measure.

Dexter's decided to go to the baptism Brother Sam invited him to after all, even though the idea of religious faith goes right over his head. It's too bad that they don't have time to have a discussion, because it might've come in handy when Dex is called out to deal with the "wicked rodeo" we saw at the end of last week's episode. New guy Mike (Billy Brown) quickly points out to the Metro team that it has something to do w...

'Nikita' Recap: 'Knightfall' (2.03)

10/8/2011 12:03am EDT
As a disabled person, I was pretty happy that we were represented in this week's Nikita. Unfortunately, the handicapped dude's a villain. Tough break - but regardless, "Knightfall" is still a pretty good episode.

In Quebec City, a mysterious figure on a motorcycle assassinates the Energy Minister. He's not mysterious for long: his name is Ramon (Simon Kassianides from the last James Bond film, Quantum of Solace), and his face is familiar to Michael and Nikita. She captured him six years ago, and now they find out that Division's decided to keep him on the payroll instead. Needless t...

Who Are TV's All-Time Sexiest Couples?

6/27/2011 2:00pm EDT
Buffy the Vampire Slayer
Buffy and Angel from cult TV show "Buffy The Vampire Slayer" have topped a new magazine poll to find TV's All-Time Sexiest Couples.

The pair, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar and David Boreanaz, beat out "Moonlighting's" David and Maddie (Bruce Willis and Cybill Shepherd) and Father Ralph and Meggie (Richard Chamberlain and Rachel Ward) from "The Thorn Birds" in the Entertainment Weekly countdown.

"Gossip Girl" couple Chuck and Blair - played by Ed Westwick and Leighton Meester - and "Battlestar Galactica's" Number Six and Gaius Baltar (Tricia Helfer and James Callis) round out the top fiv...

Could 'Firefly' Return To Television With New Episodes?

2/22/2011 1:00pm EST
Firefly re-runs are back on television - and now star Nathan Fillion may be putting the pieces together to create new episodes of the cult show.

Recently, the Science Channel revealed that it is re-airing the entire Firefly series in its intended order and in high definition (for those of you not in the know, FOX originally aired the episodes without any consistency). The Science Channel will be bookending each episode with additional content from Dr. Michio Kaku, who will discuss the theoretical science behind the show.

Entertainment Weekly asked Fillion, who played Mal on the short-live...

Interview: 'Fairly Legal' Is A Perfect Fit For Michael Trucco

2/2/2011 12:30pm EST
Fairly Legal
As dedicated Assistant District Attorney Justin Patrick on USA's new original series Fairly Legal, Michael Trucco has turned my head to the point of being near show-stealing. Recently, I had the pleasure of talking to the former Battlestar Galactica star to find out what makes the character of Justin tick, about his own Northern California upbringing, and how he has more in common with his on-screen alter ego than you might think.

I feel like I should apologize. I have realized I'm probably the only person on the planet who hasn't yet seen Battlestar Galactica.

Whoa. We’ve got somethi...

TV Book Club: The Science Of 'Battlestar Galactica'

1/23/2011 3:00pm EST
Science of BSG
As regular readers may know, I've recently started watching Battlestar Galactica. Anytime I start watching a sci-fi series, my mind is always drawn to the question of what in the fictional world is even remotely plausible. I love knowing what makes these universes tick. Thankfully, Wiley-Blackwell has a handy book to help answer that question: The Science of Battlestar Galactica, by Patrick Di Justo and Kevin R. Grazier.

The Science of Battlestar Galactica answers all those questions fans want to know about the series' underlying science (in fact, some parts of the book include exc...

'Stargate Universe' Kaput!

12/17/2010 6:17pm EST
Stargate Universe
Robert Carlyle's sci-fi TV show Stargate Universe has been cancelled after two seasons.

The series, a spin-off from popular 1994 film Stargate, will come to an end in the spring following the broadcast of the final episodes of season two.

Carlyle won a Best Actor prize for his role in the show at the 2010 Gemini Awards.

The news comes following the axe of another show on the Syfy network, Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica, which was halted mid-season in October due to falling ratings, with the final episodes due for broadcast in January.

TV On Blu-Ray: Sorting The Argument

12/6/2010 11:00am EST
Ever since TV shows began to be released on Blu-Ray, I've heard the same chorus of cries over and over again: "Why isn't there a Blu-Ray? I won't buy it until it's on Blu-Ray!" I always found myself wondering, "Is it really that big a deal?"

I decided to find out for myself.

Before I begin, a disclaimer is warranted: as you know if you're a regular reader of my TV on DVD column, I am not an audiovisual engineer or technical expert. That said, I do have the eye of someone who's watched way too much TV over the last quarter century, a reliable Blu-Ray player, and a brand-new 40" tele...

'Caprica' Kaput!

10/28/2010 12:17pm EDT
Battlestar Galactica prequel Caprica has been axed after less than a year on TV screens.

The Syfy network show, starring Eric Stoltz, debuted in January and returned to the small screen this month after a mid-season hiatus.

However, fans will now have to wait until next year to see the final five episodes of season one - TV bosses have axed the series with immediate effect amid declining viewing figures.

Syfy network spokesman Mark Stern says, "We appreciate all the support that fans have shown for Caprica and are very proud of the producers, cast, writers and the rest of the amazing...

Katee Sackhoff Heads To 'CSI'

9/8/2010 7:00pm EDT
Katee Sackhoff
Scoop master Michael Ausiello, writer for Entertainment Weekly, is reporting that Battlestar Gallactica hottie and recent 24 cast member Katee Sackhoff has been picked up to star as a possible recurring role in CSI where she will play Detective Reed, a smart, tough, and feisty investigator with an acknowledged lack of sensitivity. Sounds like the part was written for her reading that description and it sounds a lot like the character Starbuck that she played on BSG.

Sackhoff was the producers choice to succeed Jorja Fox when she left the series but when Sackhoff read for the part, they we...

Katee Sackhoff Beats Cancer

3/31/2010 11:30pm EDT
"Battlestar Galactica" and "24" star Katee Sackhoff has beaten cancer - but the fight has put her in therapy.

The 29-year-old actress, who plays Dana Walsh on the hit show, was diagnosed with thyroid cancer last year, and now feels sure she has won her battle for life.

The health crisis has given her a new outlook on life - but the scare put her in therapy.

She says, "It was the scariest thing I've ever been through. I'm still in therapy trying to get over it."

But the disease has given her new positivity: "I had cancer. Nothing scares me now."

The Visitors Are Everywhere In Latest Episode Of 'V'

11/11/2009 12:53pm EST
As you might expect, the Visitors on "V" are not too happy with FBI Agent Eric or Hot Priest Jack at the moment. The second episode of "V" starts out just as the last one ends, with Erica and Father Hotness (this will be his name from now on) trying to run away from the V's that come to the secret meeting warehouse. Erica tries to place a 911 call to get police to the scene, but the V's intercept her call and send one of those weird robot drones after them. Erica wisely smashes it with a baseball bat, and the two agree to trust no one. Whoa. Where's Fox Mulder when you need him?

Now that...

Everything Geeky: Sci-Fi Shows You May Have Missed

11/4/2009 2:50pm EST
After watching the premiere of "V" last night, I was starting to wonder if Sci-Fi is going to make a real comeback into the spotlight. Let's face it, the popularity of this genre has risen in the past few years. It is no longer just the diehard Trekkies that care about Spock and Kirk, but the newcomers swarming after J.J. Abrams' reboot.

With shows like "Lost" and "Heroes" gaining notice on major television networks and the critical acclaim of "Battlestar Galactica," the stereotypes of typical "sci-fi nerds" is starting to wear off. In its place are people who never cared about phasers ...

'V' Recap:'The Visitors Are Here'

11/4/2009 12:11pm EST
ABC's "V" is finally here, one of the most highly anticipated shows of the season, and it is coming out strong. The show is a remake of a sci-fi miniseries that lost a great deal of its popularity once it turned into a regular TV show. It looks like ABC hopes to reboot and renew the fanbase, so everyone who loves Nazi-like reptile aliens with a secret plan to take over the Earth ... be prepared. The Visitors are here.

It is a quiet normal day on Earth. FBI Agent Erica (aka Juliet from "Lost") wakes up to feel the world shaking a little, and she goes to check on her teenage son Tyler. ...

10/19/2009 6:19pm EDT
Battlestar Galactica pictures
Television's most thrilling science fiction adventure makes a stunning turnabout when "Battlestar Galactica: The Plan" debuts on Blu-ray Hi-Def and DVD on October 27, 2009 from Universal Studios Home Entertainment. For the first time ever, fans can experience the uncut and uncensored story of humanity's futuristic fight for survival through the eyes of their deadly adversaries, the Cylons. This never-before-seen perspective of the Cylon plan reunites the series' original television cast, including Emmy Award winner Edward James Olmos, Dean Stockwell, Tricia Helfer, Grace Park and Callum Kei...

Grace Park And Tricia Helfer's Explosive 'Maxim' Photo Shoot

10/14/2009 4:30pm EDT
Grace Park and Tricia Helfer Maxim
Battlestar Galactica may have run its course, but Grace Park and Tricia Helfer aren't done seducing the human race. The two are featured in Maxim's November issue (on newsstands October 20) in a sexy spread. Check out the gallery after the break.

Maxim asked the pair about "Battlestar Galactica: The Plan," a "prequel-ish" movie announced by SyFy.

Since the new Battlestar movie is coming to DVD before TV, can we expect some R-rated action?

Tricia Helfer: There will certainly be a lot more explicit action on the DVD. And I refuse to have a body double, so you will see a little bit o...

'Dollhouse' Recap: 'Belle Chose'

10/12/2009 8:35am EDT
Fox has a history of messing with Joss Whedon shows, and while they respectfully gave him a second season for "Dollhouse," they still enjoy mixing up his episodes. Last week's episode 'Belle Chose' was supposed to be the second week, but they pushed it to the third instead. Why? Honestly I have no idea. This is a far superior episode to last week's Crazy Mama scenario, and it makes a lot more sense since it gets into Ballard's trouble with being a handler. What's done is done, but this episode is a sign that the show is picking up.

It starts out introducing the audience to a very creepy...

'Dollhouse' Season 2 Premiere: A Great Opening To A New Season

9/28/2009 9:07am EDT
Well, as everyone expected, Joss Whedon's new show "Dollhouse" was canceled by Fox after just one season, causing fans to go completely crazy and ... what? Wait, it didn't get canceled? What is this madness you speak of? They put it on the Friday death slot and it barely had any viewers! There's magic in the air, and "Dollhouse" fans were given their biggest Christmas wish: one more season of this increasingly strong show. It had ups and downs in the first year, but by the second half things were ironing out and the return of Alpha was truly delightful. Now it's time to get back inside and ...

Everything Geeky - We Geeks Hate You Too, Emmys

9/22/2009 8:45am EDT
Neil Patrick Harris
As many eager television viewers may know, the 61st Primetime Emmy Awards was on Sunday evening, and despite going up against a very important football game it scored the higher ratings than the past three years. The Emmys have been declining in viewership, as have most of the major awards shows, and last year was especially dismal.

Luckily the Emmys decided to bolster their show by having a fan favorite as the host - CBS golden boy Neil Patrick Harris - and have a generally well written script for the presenters and in-between segments. This is all well and good, but for geekdom, it wa...

Are TV Remakes A Good Idea?

9/10/2009 4:27pm EDT
Looking at the CW's Tuesday line up, it's almost like getting a blast from the past: "90210" and "Melrose Place" on again? Is it the 90s? No, they're just two examples of the new television remakes blasting onto the screen, and they're not alone. "Eastwick," based on the "Witches of Eastwick" movie, premieres on September 23 on ABC, and "V" (premiering Nov. 3) is a remake of a canceled science fiction series. Now ABC has the rights to adapt "St. Elmo's Fire" from the popular film, and NBC is bringing back their detective drama from the 70s "The Rockford Files."

This is hardly a new thin...

The fall season is finally upon us, and that means television is worth watching again. Soon the Tivo will be completely full, every night will be a new adventure, and all our answers from last season's cliff hangers will (hopefully) be answered. Take a look at 10 TV shows we can't wait to see this coming season!

Gossip Girl (returns September 14)

Season two had a few shaky moments, including the illicit teacher-student affair with Dan and Chuck's flirtation with the under...

The Syfying Of Science Fiction Is Both Good & Bad

8/29/2009 2:00pm EDT
True Blood
Everyone seems really into vampires lately. Sexy vampires that have steamy vampire sex with each other all the time. If not vampires than it's people with psychic abilities (Psych) or people that travel through alternate dimensions. And that's just on television. These days a major blockbuster movie can't make a return without aliens (District 9), killer robots (Transformers) or wizards (Harry Potter). We live in a time where Quentin Tarantino is playing with alternate history (Inglourious Basterds) and weepy chick flicks are about time travel (The Time Traveler's Wife).

Science fiction ...

Patton Oswalt: 'Big Fan' Of Comics, Not Sports

8/27/2009 1:59pm EDT
Big Fan
In Big Fan, comedian Patton Oswalt plays a huge New York Giants fan. The problem is, he doesn't exactly root for a team on Sunday in real life. So in his exclusive chat with PopEater, he summed up how he got into character: "Basically I had to draw on my geeky love for comics. It's the same spark, just different fuel."

Big Fan has been riding a wave of buzz since its Sundance Film Festival debut - even drawing implications of a Golden Globe or Oscar nod. "I honestly don't know what to do when you're nominated. I'm assuming they send a car for you, and you go to some parties.

"I'd be...

Learn More About SyFy's New Drama And 'BSG' Spinoff 'Caprica'

8/20/2009 10:07am EDT
Long ago, in a popular culture period far, far away, to watch or read science fiction was synonymously tied to the then derogatory term of 'geek'. Now that stereotype has somewhat weakened. One of the many reasons for this change was the Ron Moore reimagining of 'Battlestar Galactica' in 2004. 'BSG' was a hit not just amongst the typical sci-fi fan base, as it is most commonly discussed as a space opera, but to more non-traditional fans. When 'Heroes' debuted on NBC it was a break in network format. Many questioned why it was not to air on the sister channel, then, Sci-Fi, and spurred d...

Everything Geeky: Apple iPhone 3GS

6/15/2009 2:44pm EDT
iPhone 3GS
You know, if you think about what Apple has accomplished in the past ten years, it is simply astonishing. The company has not had the easiest of routes from its creation in 1976, nor has it always been able to compete with the various PC companies. It had a following of extremely loyal fans of course, but then the iPod and iPhone made it a mainstream kind of company. Then there was iTunes and App Store and the Macbook Pro, and suddenly everywhere you look the little apple symbol showed up. The competitors have had to try and keep up ever since, but let's be honest ... we're used to looking ...

DVD Versus Blu-ray: Enjoying A Film At Its Best

6/3/2009 9:00am EDT
One can only assume the somewhat recent onslaught of the "need" for Blu-ray comes only from a desire to have people buy films and television show sets over again. After having to update a copy of 'Sneakers' from VHS tape to DVD, a completely reasonable choice, the buck stops here. Yes, the technology is interesting at best, but it is brutally frustrating at worst.

The problem is not with the players, although they are extremely expensive still and the best player is still the one that comes in the PlayStation 3, the problem instead lies way back in the beginning of the cycle - the ...
