'New Year's Eve' Beats 'The Sitter' At Weekend Box Office

Star-studded romantic comedy "New Year's Eve" has crawled to the top of the box office chart in the slowest weekend of ticket sales in three years.

The movie, starring Robert De Niro, Halle Berry, Michelle Pfeiffer, Zac Efron, Ashton Kutcher and Katherine Heigl, grossed a weak $13.7 million in its opening weekend - a stark contrast to director Garry Marshall's last hit, 2010's "Valentine's Day," which also featured an ensemble cast and debuted with a healthy $56.3 million.

Jonah Hill's new funny film "The Sitter" opened in second with a lacklustre $10 million.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1" is still a big hit in cinemas, keeping "The Muppets" off the top of the box office for another week.

"The Muppets" were expected to take over the top spot on Sunday, but a weekend surge from "Twilight" fans kept the sequel at number one with ticket sales of $16.9 million.

In 17 days since its release in the U.S., the film has grossed an impressive $247.3 million domestically.

"The Muppets" came in second with $11.2 million.

The latest installment of hit vampire franchise "Twilight" continues to slay the competition at the U.S. box office after grossing $42 million in its second week on release.

"The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1," starring Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, remained the most popular movie among Americans over the Thanksgiving weekend, boosting its domestic total to date to $221.3 million.

The film continues to draw the crowds worldwide too - weekend box office sales outside the U.S. grossed $71.5 million.

Justin Bieber has turned New York red and green after lighting up the Empire State Building to promote new children's movie "Arthur Christmas."

The teen pop sensation, whose festive song "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" features on the animated film's soundtrack, headed to the Big Apple landmark on Friday to flip the switch and mark the start of the holidays.

Bieber had a busy day - he then went to delight sick kids as part of a special meet-and-greet set up by organizers at the Make-A-Wish Foundation charity.

Steven Spielberg's epic "The Adventures Of Tintin," the "Cars" sequel and "Gnomeo & Juliet" are among the 18 movies in consideration for Best Animated Feature Film at next year's Oscars.

Also making the cut are "Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked," "Arthur Christmas," "Happy Feet Two," "Puss in Boots," "Rango," "Rio" and "The Smurfs."

The 84th Academy Awards nominations will be announced on January 24.
