February 11th, 2012 8:15am EST
denzel
With “Safe House” in theaters this weekend, audiences will get to see Denzel Washington as a rogue CIA agent who might possibly be the most dangerous man on the planet. Washington, who has been impressing audiences for over two decades, is one of the rare actors in Hollywood who can successfully portray a character that doesn’t easily fit into either the “good guy” or “bad guy” category.

Even a cursory glance at his filmography, one can easily see the varied career Washington has had. To recognize one of the most talented actors of his generation, here are some of Washington’s most memorab...

Rapper T.I. is deadly serious about becoming a movie star because he wants to be more famous as a Hollywood player than a hip-hop hitmaker.

T.I.
Rapper T.I. is shifting his focus from the music industry to Hollywood - because he wants to be an Academy Award winner within the next 10 years.

The hip-hop star has landed small roles in films such as Ridley Scott's American Gangster, and takes on a more significant part in the new crime thriller Takers.

However, T.I. admits he is building up his acting portfolio - because he doesn't want to be rapping into his late 30's like Jay-Z or Eminem. And he's intent on claiming gold at Tinseltown's most revered ceremony in the next decade.

The 29 year old tells Complex magazine, "I want to ...

The Golden Age Of Black Talent In Hollywood

March 2nd, 2010 10:05am EST
Are Black Men The Dominant Leading Actors Of This Era
Hollywood has always had its share of big-name black talent, from Sidney Poitier to Hattie McDaniel to Louis Gossett, Jr. But looking back, none of those big names owned Hollywood like Clint Eastwood, Harrison Ford, or Audrey Hepburn did. Poitier, McDaniel, and Gossett, Jr. were immensely talented pioneers, but they were vastly outnumbered by their peers in the industry. Unfortunate as it was, they were the exception in Hollywood, not the rule.

This was probably due in part to the social fabric of America at the time. It can’t have been easy for Sidney Poitier, even with his incredible tal...

Is 40 Dangerous Territory For Men In Hollywood?

October 15th, 2008 12:25pm EDT
George Clooney
There's a saying in Hollywood that goes, when a woman turns 40 her career is over, when a man turns 40 it's just beginning. Sex appeal seems to be the driving force in most stars careers and the perception of most men is that they get sexier with age. Thanks to plastic surgery and changing attitudes women have a fighting chance of keeping their share of the sexy spotlight. But what about the men of Hollywood?

In a not-so-popular film called "I'll Do Anything" Nick Nolte plays an out of work actor who's sleeping with a casting director and lands an audition for a show she's working on. ...

Why Are So Many Rappers Acting?

August 27th, 2008 11:46am EDT
Hancock
This isn't to bash rappers, nor is it to say that these artists aren't allowed to pursue different paths in Hollywood. With so many prominent rappers acquiring roles in big movies though, it begs the question-why?

It's not as if rappers in movies are a new thing. In 1991, Mario Van Peebles cast Ice-T as a cop in "New Jack City," a film that is beloved by many. That same year, director John Singleton cast Ice Cube as a Los Angeles gangbanger in "Boyz N the Hood." These two movies helped open the floodgates for rappers to enter the world of acting.

Soon, Will Smith went from rap...

LOS ANGELES (AP) - No matter who wins, one key prediction from Academy Awards overseers already has come true: The show will go on.

It was a nail-biter for weeks as a Hollywood writers strike threatened to decimate Sunday's Oscars, with stars and filmmakers indicating they would not cross picket lines if the labor quarrel remained unsettled.

In the wake of the Golden Globes, whose celebrity bash was stripped down to a pitiful mid-January news conference because of the strike, Oscar organizers insisted their ceremony would go on as planned.

The 100-day strike ended less than t...

No Country For Old Men
The lights go down. A low, rumbling bass slightly shakes the seats as the occupants draw in a tight, anticipatory breath. The first thing to break the tension is a thin beam of light across the center of the screen. It is accompanied by a low, rat-at-tat rhythm that could be rain on a tin roof- if it weren't for the high-pitched shriek in the background.

Is that yelling? Shouting? The shriek morphs into a scream of mechanical menace. It's a bomb, and it's followed by an explosion linked to the picture exploding into life. The audience sees all-out war. Guts are flying, blood is strea...

American Gangster director Ridley Scott may have two heavy hitters cast in a film that's based on a heart pounding true story, but it also succeeds in closely following, in some cases adding to, an already winning formula that was most recently seen in Martin Scorsesee's The Departed.

In lieu of the plotline, which is long and winding, take a look at the outline:

Step one: Get a bad guy. Then dress him up like you would the hero. Make him violent and powerful, but hard working, rich, and charming. For good measure, show him to us before you show us anybody else. We'll automaticall...
