The Explosive Movies That Crushed The Box Office On Independence Day Weekend

July 4th, 2014 8:01am EDT
Wild Wild West
The weekend following Independence Day here in America has become a must-perform spot on the calendar for movie studios. This year, the 4th of July lands on a Friday, leaving us bereft of new releases (although Transformers: Age of Extinction, which came out on the 27th, should do nicely). So with nothing new coming out, let's take a look at the bombastic films we celebrated freedom with in years past.

Wild Wild West

If there's one thing you need to know about Will Smith, it's that he loves July 4th. No other actor has benefited more from releasing films around Independence Day than Wil...

Box Office Predictions: 'Godzilla' Should Stomp Its Way To No.1
1) Godzilla- 80M Weekend, 80M Total

Expect big things this weekend from a big monster of a movie. A lot of people have compared the ad campaign to World War Z, making it an apocalypse adventure on a global scale. What’s equally important here is that they’ve actually made a good movie, apparently. Godzilla is currently sitting at 84% on Rotten Tomatoes, higher than Million Dollar Arm, Neighbors, and Amazing Spider-Man 2. The only downfall is that the film technically lacks a bankable star, even though most people know who Bryan Cranston is by now. It does face some competition from the 2n...

"At the tail end of this movie we set up some of the other characters that will probably end up being in the Sinister Six," Sony Pictures' Amy Pascal revealed in the latest issue of ...

The Amazing Spider-Man 2
A new TV spot for The Amazing Spider-Man 2 was released by Sony on Thursday, teasing that something big is about to happen in the new full-length trailer that's set to run during the Super Bowl this Sunday.

The teaser reveals a lot of what was already shown in the first full trailer, released at the beginning of December, but this 30-second preview ends with a huge cliffhanger: our hero catching girlfriend Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone) in mid-air and then the two crashing together through the glass roof of a skyscraper.

"See what happens next Super Bowl Sunday," a graphic then reads.

Sony Confirms At Least Two Villain Spinoffs Of 'The Amazing Spider-Man'

Spider-Man 3
Columbia Pictures has announced that at least two new films based on the Spider-Man franchise are in the works.

Two of the "several" planned films feature the web-slinging superhero's enemies Venom and the Sinister Six -- a group of supervillains that includes Electro, the main antagonist in next spring's The Amazing Spider-Man 2, played by Jamie Foxx.

Marc Webb, the appropriately and ironically named director of The Amazing Spider-Man 1 and 2, won't be directing any of the films, but he will be overseeing the story development for the spinoffs, according to FirstShowing.net.

'Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark' To End Broadway Run In January

Spider-Man Turn Off The Dark ending on Broadway
Broadway's superhero musical "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" is set to end its run early next year.

The production, which is the most expensive stage production ever at $75 million and features music from U2's Bono and The Edge, became one of the Great White Way's biggest earning shows after a very troubled start.

The play saw a big fall in earnings over the fall and prducers have decided to pull the plug after two years. It's not over though -- they'll merely be packing up the show and taking it to Las Vegas.

"Economically we have a greater opportunity in the Las Vegas market," producer...

As a critic of all things entertainment, it’s my job to make quick, black-and-white decisions. So when it was announced that Sony was rebooting its Spider-Man franchise just five years after the Tobey Maguire fronted “Spider-Man 3” swung its way into theaters, I wasn’t just skeptical, I was downright livid. It seemed like nothing more than a movie studio’s desperate money grab, creative integrity be damned.

After being somewhat softened by the four-minute trailer, I’m happy to admit that I am a full-on marshmallow after seeing the “The Amazing Spider-Man,” and have never been more gratef...

The Amazing Spider-Man, shot in 3D and directed by Mark Webb (500 Days of Summer), is an edgy, emotional, action pack, and at times boring movie. Yes I did use the 'b' word.
