Spotlight On The Cute And Quirky Zooey Deschanel

October 20th, 2011 4:00pm EDT
Zooey Deschanel
If you haven’t heard of Zooey Deschanel, you are most likely living under a rock. She’s the cute and quirky girl from Elf, 500 Days of Summer and the one of the only new fall shows that seem to be thriving, New Girl. We love her for a few different reasons. She is married to Death Cab for Cutie front man, Ben Gibbard (I’m sure they make the sweetest music together), she is not afraid to be a big dork (see New Girl) and her character in Failure to Launch (the only good thing about that movie).

The thirty one year old was born in Los Angeles into an entertainment family, hence her and her si...

Making the transition from adolescence into adulthood is a critical phase in an individual's life. This coming-of-age period, which has been coined "emerging adulthood" by Clark University research professor, Dr. Jeffrey Arnett, is characterized by identity exploration, self-focus, instability, a belief in boundless possibilities, and feeling in-between. According to Arnett's theory, in industrialized societies the types of experiences that people have who are in their late teens to mid-20's have changed dramatically over the past 50 years. Instead of being quick to make that walk down the ...

Writer's Viewpoint: 'Late Night With Jimmy Fallon'

April 9th, 2009 10:56am EDT
Jimmy Fallon
We are now a few weeks into the Jimmy Fallon era of late night network programming -- his absence this week was allegedly a planned vacation, not a result from his argument/possible fight at a New York City pizza restaurant -- and, well, I have mixed feelings. Now, I've made it clear I've always kind of enjoyed Jimmy Fallon so I am certainly not one looking to see him fail. At the same time, though, there's something about his show, so far, that has annoyed me. I couldn't quite put my finger on it, though. I almost feel the show is trying to be "too cool": Hey, look, we have bloggers (I can...

The film is based on the landmark 1984 graphic novel by Alan Moore and Dave Gibbons. A group of superher...

Jimmy Fallon
Truth, Justice And Gordon Shumway: (weekly column) - It's probably not the easiest thing to be Jimmy Fallon these days; the amount of backlash he endures is typically reserved for those the Iraqi media throw their shoes at. The web episodes leading up to the March premiere of his new show have been inconsistent, at best. To make matters worse, Jay Leno has just agreed to stay at NBC, hosting a new show at 10:00 PM on weeknights; effectively making Fallon the third hour of late night comedy (he will have to get behind Conan O'Brien for his spot under the bus where NBC threw them). To say the...

Not all relatives should show up at the same office everyday, and not everyone wants to get into the family business. Yet when the perks include fame, big paychecks, and glamorous premieres, the choice seems a little easier to make.

And since nepotism in Hollywood is as classic a tale as Citizen Kane, it’s no surprise that lots of Tinseltown legacies are following in the footsteps of such other celebrity offspring as Michael Douglas, Jane Fonda, and Liza Minnelli.

Here are five we think are worth watching...

He was the guy who took the training wheels off our bikes, let us jump off the top of the fridge when Mom wasn't looking, and the one whose admiration and respect was hard earned and beyond gratifying.

For the lucky majority, Father's Day is an opportunity to express what we usually fail to: how much the guidance of a paternal figure has touched our lives for the better. But what of the unlucky few for whom the idea of Father's Day is a kick in the ribs? Which stars won't be buying a tie, power tools or steak dinner for the old man come June 15?

Movies With Heart: The 100 Best 'Romdramedies' Of The Past 20 Years

Clueless
There's the quintessential romantic comedy, and then there's the romdramedy. Similar to a dramedy (in which there is an equal balance of humor and serious content), a romdramedy combines comedy and drama with that mushy thing we call romance.

This is not a list of the best films over the past 20 years. Rather it is a list that gives preferences to those films that best combine all three elements - romance, comedy and drama.

Films like Magnolia and The Matrix were barred from competition, while films like Down with Love were considered (however, that one didn't make the cut)....

Return of the 70's Singer-Songwriter

Successful singer-songwriters have spanned across the decades, but no era saw them flourish like the 1970s. James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Bob Dylan, Dan Fogelberg, Carly Simon, Jackson Browne and Neil Young (to name a few) were tearing up the airwaves. Their simple, thought-provoking melodies struck a chord with a Vietnam War-torn America and left an indelible mark on the modern music biz. Well, tune your radios and adjust your mp3 players, folks. The 70s singer-songwriter sound is back - with a whole new batch of artists.

Here's part two of the best songs about girls with every letter of the alphabet, regardless of whether or not the subject of the song is the same as the title. There were two considerations in making the list: How good the song is versus how cool the chick sounds. See A to M here, and check out N to Z:

N: Darling Nikki by Prince because, if you will recall, all her masturbating with a magazine got Tipper Gore's panties all in a bunch, which in turn prompted the Explicit Lyrics stickers.

O: Ophelia by The Band. Pretty cool song, but mostly because there weren't many "O's."

As a film junkie and music geek I always look forward to seeing what songs directors will put in certain scenes to create the right mood. Finding the perfect song isn't always easy. The song has to fit that key moment or it could ruin the movie.
