The Nine Spookiest Kids' Movies

August 16th, 2012 4:07pm EDT
Paranorman
ParaNorman, the animated tale of a boy who saunters around town with a secret ability to see and speak to ghosts, was awarded a comfy PG rating by the MPAA and will probably draw in this weekend's under-13 crowd with no trouble. However, is it just us or is the concept of a kid who sees ghouls and comes to blows with zombies in order to save his town a tad spooky for the kiddies?

Chances are it's good clean fun, but given writer-director Chris Butler's experience with movies which tow the line between having a few frights and scarring a kid for life (he was a storyboard artist on Tim Burto...

Curious, she follows the rabbit to an enormous tree, and tumbles down a hole that takes her to Underland, a strange world inhabited by anthropomorphic creatures in search of someone to save them from the dreaded Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter), who has assumed control of the kingdom by decapitating anyone who dares disag...

Anne Hathaway Turned Down 'Alice In Wonderland' Lead

February 5th, 2010 9:22am EST
Anne Hathaway Turned Down
Anne Hathaway turned down the title role in Tim Burton's new Alice In Wonderland movie - because she was fed up with playing a "pretty girl in a fairy dress." The actress was asked to star as Alice in the upcoming fantasy film but opted instead to play the White Queen - because she had previously played a pretty protagonist in The Princess Diaries movies which launched her career. The role of Alice eventually went to Australian newcomer Mia Wasikowska, but Hathaway has no regrets about her decision.

She tells Britain's GQ magazine, "The studio had the Alice script a long time ago and I...

Writer's Viewpoint: Tim Burton Has Become A Fad Disguised As Art

August 19th, 2009 10:40am EDT
Tim Burton
I'm not against fads per se, but this Tim Burton mess bothers me. It's not the kind of harmless era-defining fad that jelly bracelets and scrunchies were in the 80s, and it's certainly not as subtle as Apple's catchy use of the lower-case "i."

Since the turn of the new millennium, Tim Burton has emerged as a kind of self-perpetuating cultural organism, eating other fads and franchises as it grows overstuffed and unable to control its own ego. And now it might be too late for us to do anything about it. It's like a monster straight out of, well - a Tim Burton film.

The kind of people...

Happy 'Slutty' Halloween

October 27th, 2008 10:52am EDT
Slutty Halloween
We've all done it ladies! We've put the word "slutty" in front of whatever it is we've chosen to go as for Halloween. Things that aren't normally slutty will find a way to be slutty like police officers or even our favorite Disney character. And dressing up in a bra and booty shorts is a perfectly acceptable costume. This must be a guy's favorite holiday! Who needs to go to a strip club? Just go to a bar on Halloween!

The movie Mean Girls describes it best - "Halloween is the one night a year when girls can dress like a total slut and no other girls can say anything about it." On the ...

In the ancient Greek world the bee symbolised the soul because they migrated in swarms. And the Roman god of love, Cupid, is often pictured with bees or being stung. I made this bee for a boy who wanted to give his girl a special ...

Shock rocker Marilyn Manson has dismissed reports Tim Burton is to direct his forthcoming Lewis Carroll biopic, insisting news about the filmmaker's involvement is all hearsay.
