Larry Hagman & Patrick Duffy Wanted To Do An 'Airplane!' Spoof Of 'Dallas'

June 7th, 2012 12:09pm EDT
Dallas
After they finished the 14th season, "Dallas" stars Larry Hagman and Patrick Duffy wanted to write a spoof version of their hit primetime soap. But producers shot down their idea.

The legendary sex-and-scandal program ended in 1991 amid plummeting ratings, and later the two actors got together to discuss reviving it. They both favoured a comedy version of the Ewing family exploits based on 1980 spoof disaster movie "Airplane!," but Dallas bosses vetoed the project.

Hagman tells The Hollywood Reporter, "I thought we were going to make a comedy out of it."

Duffy adds, "Larry and I thought ...

Can 'Avengers,' 'Dark Knight Rises,' And 'Amazing Spider-Man' Make 2012 The Best Movie Summer Ever?

May 2nd, 2012 2:07pm EDT
The Avengers
The movie industry earned $4.3 billion last summer at the U.S. box office to make it the best summer ever (I thought piracy was killing the industry?) but don't expect the mark to last for long. There's a team of superhero movies coming along, and each one could break records.

The Dark Knight Rises and The Avengers look to score over $400 million each and should be boosted with IMAX and 3D premiums. Thus far, The Avengers have already made $218 million overseas. There's also PIXAR's Brave and The Amazing Spider-Man - Pixar is always good for a cash infusion, but we'll have to wait and see ...

2010 Celeb Deaths
Fortunately, 2010 wasn't a big one for celebrity deaths. In 2009, several notables died, including Michael Jackson, Patrick Swayze and Farrah Fawcett.

May was a particularly bad month, in which stars such as Gary Coleman and Dennis Hopper passed away.

Casey Johnson, Johnson & Johnson heiress and fiancee of reality star Tila Tequila, died January 4 from diabetic ketoacidosis.

"All My Children" patriarch James Mitchell died on January 22, weeks shy of his 90th birthday. The cause was chronic obstructive pulmonary disease complicated by pneumonia.

November 29th, 2010 4:18pm EST
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar remembers Leslie Nielsen
Today in his blog, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar paid tribute to Leslie Nielsen who died yesterday at the age of 84. Kareem played a small role and worked with Nielsen in "Airplane!" (1980). Most will agree "Airplane!" was the mother of all spoof movies. Here is Kareem's blog post:

"For me, it was a real pleasure to know and work with Leslie Nielsen. He was a consummate professional when the cameras were rolling. And during down time he was a notorious practical joker. He would often engage the casual acquaintance in what seemed to be a serious conversation while he manipulated a whoopie cushion cau...

Leslie Nielsen - one of the most prolific actors in slapstick comedy - died on Sunday afternoon in a big building with patients, but that's not important right now, near his home in Florida.

John S. Kelly, the star's agent, released a statement saying he died from complications from pneumonia at 5:34 p.m. with his wife and friends at hand.

"We are saddened by the passing of beloved actor Leslie Nielsen, probably best remembered as Lt. Frank Drebin in 'The Naked Gun' series of pictures, but who enjoyed a more than 60-year career in motion pictures and television," he said.

Top 10 Acting Performances By Athletes

Cam Neely as Seabass
A director getting the optimum performance out of an actor is not unlike a coach getting a great performance out of an athlete. One has to use the right guy in the right scene with expert timing. These are situations where one could film countless scenes of all different kinds, and getting laughs so big with these athletes would seem impossible - they're almost perfect. Remember, the fellas on this list appear here because they got the biggest laughs, not because they were the best actors or in the best movies. While Something About Mary is a funnier and better movie than many on this l...

Is It OK To Dislike Caddyshack?

January 5th, 2009 12:00pm EST
Caddyshack
Caddyshack isn't that good, and it's not very funny. If you're 9 out of 10 red blooded American men, that last sentence just infuriated you like I just made slanderous remarks about your grandmother. I've never met your grandmother, but I have seen Caddyshack - and it kind of sucks. My editors were quick to advise me that although they were giving me the go-ahead on this piece, they would have to include a bigger than usual disclaimer saying that the opinions expressed are solely that of Matthew J. Swanson. I'll tell you that right now, too: it is just my opinion, but it happens to be t...

Comedian, Actor and Real Life Doctor Ken Jeong Enjoying Hollywood Success

Dr. Ken Jeong
Honesty's the best policy. That goes for anyone, whether you're a doctor, comedian, actor, or, in the case of Dr. Ken Jeong , all three. Surprisingly, all three careers have much in common: you've got to be quick on your feet, they require long, grueling hours, and sometimes the best approach is the untraditional one. Dr. Ken has committed to honesty and it's taken him a long way, from the shy teen growing up in North Carolina, to working with Judd Apatow and prancing around in a silver jumpsuit, providing backup vocals in viral videos.

Five Television Remakes We'd Like To See, But Probably Won't

January 14th, 2008 4:27pm EST
The Adventures of Brisco County Jr.
Ahh, the remake. The feelings that are evoked when you hear that your favorite program from yesteryear is being re-thought, re-vamped and re-launched for the new generation are hard to describe. Sure, remakes are almost inevitably likely to fail, but so what? That doesn't make their possibility any less tantalizing.

TV remakes don't happen often, although when they do they tend to come in waves. The crest of the latest remake wave seems to be ominously hovering right over our heads as recent launches of "Bionic Woman," "American Gladiators" and the soon-to-be debuting "Knight Ride...
