Underrated & Overrated Films Based On Graphic Novels

March 6th, 2009 9:41am EST
300
It's rare that commercials are actually right, but today they are when they claim that a film based on the "Most-Acclaimed Graphic Novel of All Time" will be released.

That film, and novel, is "Watchmen" of course. The movie comes from the 12-part comic series from Alan Moore ("From Hell", "V for Vendetta") that was quickly packaged into a graphic novel upon its completion. Many consider this series the greatest in the history of comics and the subsequent novel actually made it onto Time Magazine's 100 Greatest Novels of the Century List. Needless to say, there's no doubting its acc...

Review: A Fan's Reaction to 'Watchmen'

March 5th, 2009 11:09am EST
Watchmen
I grew up in a comic book store, so most of my days after school were spent sitting in a beanbag chair reading graphic novels. It has been a fairly exciting few years for comic fans with the emergence of the mainstream embracing what used to be considered a nerdy habit. With big blockbuster movies like Spider-Man, X-Men, and The Dark Knight taking over the Entertainment industry, it is easier to forgive bad comic movies like Catwoman or Daredevil because at least they're getting these stories out there. At least people are starting to know and love what we've known and loved for decades. Ye...

Will 'Watchmen' Live Up To The Hype?

March 3rd, 2009 9:01am EST
Watchmen
2008 was the year of the comic book movie, but this genre has only grown in popularity over the years thanks to the X-Men and Spider-Man series. In truth, they were enormously popular in the 70s and 80s due to Superman and Batman rocking the big screen, but all of these comic books are well known and ingrained into pop culture. On average most people do know who Bruce Wayne is and what happened to his parents one tragic night, or that Kal-El is the last of his kind.

Yet it is not just mainstream comics getting the attention; 300 and Sin City proved otherwise. The newest entry into the...

Iran Angered Over Films 'The Wrestler' And '300'

March 1st, 2009 11:01am EST
300
TEHRAN, Iran (AP) — An adviser to Iran's president on Sunday demanded an apology from a team of visiting Hollywood actors and movie industry officials, including Annette Bening, saying films such as 300 and The Wrestler were "insulting" to Iranians.

Without an apology, members of Iran's film industry should refuse to meet with representatives from the nine-member team, said Javad Shamaqdari, the art and cinema adviser to President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

"In my viewpoint, it is a failure to have an official meeting with one who is insulting," Shamaqdari told The Associated Press.

Finding The Right Halloween Costume And Ones To Avoid

October 13th, 2008 10:00am EDT
The Dark Knight
Picking the right Halloween costume can get tricky, especially when you're over the age of twelve. One thing that you need to be aware of in your selection is that there's a fine line

between having a good Halloween costume and making an ass of yourself. The same basic childhood rules still apply today: wear nothing that heavily restricts movement or vision, wear nothing that will burst into flames, and a homemade costume always trumps something store bought. Once you get the right idea, putting together a costume is easy. It's getting the idea that's the hard part. As Halloween sweeps i...

Despite Jet Li's Would-Be Resurrection, 'The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor' Still Flops

August 1st, 2008 9:26am EDT
The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor
(Hollywoodchicago) – The threequel that culminates with “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor” is so hackneyed that the main star of the previous two films – Brendan Fraser – wasn’t even enough any more to sell audiences on a third return. Universal Studios needed to enlist co-star Jet Li to even stand a fighting chance and take the mood the Asian way.

Jet Li as the vicious emperor comes back to life in “The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor,” which races from the catacombs of ancient China high into the spectacular Himalayas.

Movie Adaptations: Why They Succeed Or Fail & The Direction They're Headed

July 15th, 2008 8:46am EDT
A History of Violence
Jaws. Ghost World. Eyes Wide Shut. A History of Violence. Road to Perdition. The Crow. Planet of the Apes. What do these seven movies have in common? It's a lesser known fact, in some cases more than others, but none of these movies were movies first. These, as with many other films, were adapted to the screen from other media.

Film adaptations have been made since the early days of cinema, but the last decade or so has seen a definite increase in their popularity, with the growing success and popularity of comic book adaptations to the ever quickening transition of best selling novels...

Graphic Novels We'd Like To See As Films

July 8th, 2008 10:44am EDT
graphic novels
With graphic novels becoming widespread with the arrival of big movies such as "300," "Sin City," and "V for Vendetta" that gathered huge audiences, new interest arose in the stylistic hard cover comics. A graphic novel is a type of comic book usually aimed at adults with a long and complicated story that eventually does have a distinct ending. It can also be a collection of comic books bound into a single collection under a particular story arc. In any case, the world is becoming more enamored with comic book as blockbusters like "Iron Man" and "The Dark Knight" keep coming along, but ther...

Things We Don't Want To See In 'The Dark Knight'

June 11th, 2008 8:45am EDT
The Dark Knight
There were eight years between "Batman & Robin" (1997) and "Batman Begins" (2005), which became a blockbuster hit, and it was no wonder considering the extremely negative backlash "Batman & Robin" received. With cringe-worthy puns from all of the main actors - George Clooney, Uma Thurman, Alicia Silverstone, etc. - and a lack of any plot substance or inner contemplation the previous movies had showed, it seemed like the Batman movies would be given an early grave.

Then Christopher Nolan signed on to the "Batman Begins" project, a film loosely based off of "Batman: Year One" written by...

Packed With Picturesque Majesty, 'The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian' Fights Nobly For 'PG' Rating

May 16th, 2008 4:02pm EDT
The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian
(Hollywoodchicago.com) – For the life of me, I couldn’t exorcise it from my head. Amid all the splendor of such a picturesque film, this one question was like a gnat I couldn’t swat: “Is this really rated ‘PG’?” Indeed, “The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian” is rated “PG”. But that didn’t come without great scrutiny and much editing.

For starters, Walt Disney Pictures contractually required the filmmakers for the epic film to achieve a “PG” rating. The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) granted it following a wide array of amendments.

For example, director Andrew Ada...

"Hellboy II: The Golden Army" (July 11)

This is a sequel to the first "Hellboy" and is based off an enormously well received series created by Dark Horse Comics. Hellboy is the greatest supernatural detective and blends many aspects of classical horror and magic with a uniquely dry sense of humor.

The first movie was moderately popular, and the DVD sales were positive enough that a sequel was given the green light. It will be directed again by Guillermo del Toro, and star Ron Perlman as Hellboy, Selma Blair as Liz, and Doug Jones as Abe Sapien.

Blanchett Shines While 'Elizabeth: The Golden Age' Burns

Elizabeth: The Golden Age
It is hard to know what to expect when coming into Elizabeth: The Golden Age, a delayed sequel of a film that 10 years prior had been a heavy player at the Oscars. Back then, the film centered around the performance of Cate Blanchett, who stunned viewers with her complex portrayal of the loose cannon lover who becomes England’s famous virgin monarch. (A Queen and Oscar buzz? Sound familiar? It should! See Oscar Queen Facts at bottom of page.)

Blanchett does a superb job, but this film has a hard time finding its center and its pains dull the effort of a strong cast.
