Stoner Comedy
Pioneered in the '70s, the Stoner Comedy featured good times, broad laughs and copious amounts of marijuana, on which the plot often hinged. Not merely content to feature a character or two who indulged in recreational drug use, these movies -- following the example of trailblazers Cheech and Chong -- made stoners the heroes, and the sober world their nemesis. The subgenre persisted into the early '80s, fell out of favor somewhat, and then saw a resurgence as grunge culture and Quentin Tarantino once again celebrated the drug and the broad humor that came with it.
