Social Problem Film

Social problem films are mostly thought-provoking dramas about good people in dire circumstances. The characters are often working-class people and families who find themselves financially destitute through no fault of their own. In more intense cases, the protagonists are poverty stricken and must make painful choices in order to survive. Often occur during troubling times like famines, WWII, or the Great Depression. Sometimes associated with race relations (A Raisin in the Sun), labor unions (Norma Rae), or farmers (The Grapes of Wrath), but could include many other disenfranchised individuals or groups.
