Romantic Adventure
A hybrid of the romance and adventure genres, blending action, suspense, exotic locales and the dangerous journey of adventure with the romantic dilemmas of the romance genre. Traditionally, these films involve a repeated formula in which a romantic lead -- almost always a male -- protects, loses and then rescues a female, leading to a love affair. A longtime Hollywood favorite because of its accessible appeal, sharp dialogue and tongue-in-cheek tone, this movie type began its popular origins in the Golden Age of the '40s and ‘50s with films like The African Queen and River of No Return. Romancing the Stone, with its jungle locations and quick dialogue, represents a latter-day example.
