The most venerable TV type, this encompasses everything from mystery (Columbo, Twin Peaks) to family/ensemble series (The Waltons, My So-Called Life) to workplace series (ER, Lou Grant). About the only exception to this rule are prime-time soap operas such as Dallas, Knots Landing, and Peyton Place, which would get the "soap opera" designation.
