Musical Western

A type of musical that takes place in a western setting, usually featuring country-western music. These films became very popular first as serials starring the inimitable Gene Autry, Roy Rogers and Dale Evans. All of the above eventually moved on to feature films and carried much of their popularity with them. The pairing of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans was especially successful as the two crooned their way through such classics as My Pal Trigger. Gene Autry made almost a film per year, singing in most of them. There were some later attempts to marry the two genres, notably Paint Your Wagon, but without the star power of these three, they were mostly failures.
