Comedy Western
A term used to describe two hybrids of the western and comedy genres. The first is a type of parody, in which western's identifiable conventions, stereotypes, cliches, settings and iconography are heightened, warped, and mocked for comic purposes. The classic illustration is Blazing Saddles, though comedian Mack Sennett was practicing a similar send-up all the way back in the silent era. The second type of film simply places comedies within western settings, without calling attention to the actual conventions. The mixture allows elements like the gunfight, outlaws, and individualism to remain, but are used with a tongue-in-cheek approach.
