Robert Hilburn was a rock critic for the Los Angeles Times for more than three decades - the years when rock music really mattered to millions and millions of young Americans. He came in with Elvis. He knew Bob Dylan and Bruce Springsteen when they were young - and maintained a relationship with them over the years. He found an unexpected friend in John Lennon. He hung out with Janis Joplin, watched cartoons with Michael Jackson, talked about drug recovery programs with a depressed Elton John and had heart-to-heart conversations with Kurt Cobain.

In "Corn Flakes With John Lennon" (Rodale; hardcover; on-sale October 13th), Hilburn tracks these relationships. This is at once a memoir of a critic's life - the view from the best seat in the house - and a set of closely-observed portraits of the giants of rock music.

Along the way, he tells wonderful stories and shares terrific quotations, like...
-John Lennon sneaking chocolate and hoping Yoko won't find out.
-Going, as the only music critic on the trip, to Folsom Prison with Johnny Cash.
-Bruce Springsteen explaining why the audience doesn't want what it thinks it wants.
-Dylan on audiences: “You're nobody if you haven't been booed.”
-Bono confiding: “I'm sick of Bono, and I am Bono.”

In this account of the symbiotic relationship between critic and musical artist, Hilburn reflects on the ways in which he has changed and been changed by the subjects he's covered; Bono weighs in with an introduction about how Hilburn's criticism influenced and altered his own development as a musician.

"Corn Flakes With John Lennon" is more than about one man's adventures in rock and roll: It's the gripping and untold story of how popular music reshapes the way we think about the world and helps to define the modern American character.
