HISTORY announces acclaimed actor and Oscar nominee Josh Brolin (Milk, No Country for Old Men, W. and the upcoming Gangster Squad) as Narrator for the epic 12-hour / six night television event, MANKIND THE STORY OF ALL OF US which will premiere on Tuesday, November 13 at 9 p.m. ET.
"This ambitious television series captures the complex nature of man. How we as a species succeeded, shaped the world and thrived against all odds," says Josh Brolin. "HISTORY has always been committed to developing superb productions, combined with compelling educational programs that strive to inspire people to learn more about our world."
Over two years in the making, this programming event is one of the most in-depth television series ever produced by HISTORY. MANKIND will have the first global series premiere in the history of the network, as well as a worldwide educational initiative.
"MANKIND THE STORY OF ALL OF US has the same spirit and daring storytelling that made America the Story of Us such a phenomenal success. But this time we're going even bigger. This series will redefine history as we know it for people throughout the world – how it's told, how it's watched, taught and how it is experienced," said Nancy Dubuc, President, Entertainment and Media, A+E Networks.
HISTORY has developed its largest outreach campaign to date with its first worldwide education program that includes a three-year partnership with UNESCO World Heritage sites. The network is working with UNESCO councils and HISTORY affiliates around the world to raise awareness of World Heritage sites and host events where students, educators and the general public can discuss the importance of world history. The campaign will also include the launch of a Global Teach In about World Heritage on November 8th at the Newseum in Washington, DC, a study guide reaching 750,000+ educators across the globe, a student PSA contest, a host of digital events featuring maps, online games to be translated in various languages and more. It takes nine billion years for the ideal planet to form, four billion more for the right conditions to emerge before it finally happens: mankind begins. From the dawning of time, mankind has faced numerous obstacles and made surprising leaps forward. In an epic overview of the human race, this fast paced story of us is history like viewers have never seen before. Each event has been chosen because it's a key turning point— a stepping stone in our journey from hunter-gatherer to global citizen. Our story is all about connections— why some ideas take hold and spread around the world and how the lives of people in one part of the world are shaped by events in another.
Key points covered throughout the series include: surviving the Ice Age, discovering farming techniques, the sacking of Rome, empire-building under Genghis Kahn, inventing movable type, discovering the New World, the fall of the Aztec Empire, creating the Industrial Revolution, exploring space, re-engineering the human body and so much more. This is our story, a story of triumph and overcoming adversity. It is the story of all of us.
Mankind is a brutal fight for survival. The odds were against us at every turn – over 99% of all species of the earth have gone extinct. This series examines what is unique about us to have made humans the dominant species on the planet. This is a story of survival on a harsh brutal planet - against all odds, we survived.
MANKIND embraces a groundbreaking way of telling this epic human story. Drawing on a growing global interest in a revelatory field of history, now adopted by universities across the globe. 'Big history' focuses on the forces of nature to show how mankind's path is guided by events that stretch back, not hundreds, but thousands, even millions of years. How the power of science – from geology and astronomy, to physics and biology – combined to shape our shared human journey. Revealing astounding global connections, and an astonishing interconnected story. This is history without limits. Free from boundaries and politics. Our story, like it's never been told before.
MANKIND is the first television series in a generation to look at the history of the human race through the ages, but in a way that is highly ambitious in the scale of its cinematic vision, jaw dropping CGI and dramatic reconstructions of the most critical events in human history. Companion programming on HISTORY's complementary network, H2, will also support the series.
