Don "The Voice" LaFontaine coined the familiar movie trailer lead-in, "In a world..." For his wife, living in a world without him would prove to be one of the greatest challenges of all.
Five years after his passing, singer, songwriter and wife of the legendary Voiceover King, Nita Whitaker LaFontaine shares her powerful story with her memoir Finding My Voice: My Journey through Grief to Grace: Living with the Loss of Don LaFontaine (March 2013, paperback), a book she began after a writing workshop called "Writing to Heal."
Nita offers a never-before-seen look at what life with Don was really like, and what she endured following his death. Hers is a tale that is as universal as it is personal as she exposes the raw pain that follows any kind of loss.
After 20 years of marriage, three daughters, active careers, and the ups and downs that come with any relationship, nothing could have prepared Nita for what she would face after she lost her husband to unexpected complications resulting from cancer treatment. Her book exposes readers to the pain she suffered, the voice she lost — and eventually recovered — and how she did it in a world without her greatest love.
Acclaimed music artist Michael Buble lauded Finding My Voice as "a testament to both Nita's spirituality and the deep love that she and Don shared…I can't imagine having Nita's courage and fortitude to show us her journey through these past years. Her strength is an inspiration to all of us and her story tells us that with faith and love we will overcome any challenges that we face."
Finding My Voice is at once a love story and a painfully raw portrayal of Nita's journey through her crippling grief to her discovery of wholeness. Anyone who has suffered any kind of loss—and even those who haven't—will find solace and comfort in Nita's candid and moving accounting of her life with and without Don LaFontaine.
"Many knew Don as the King of Voiceovers but he was a prince of a man, as you will find out in this book. Finding my voice in a world without him felt insurmountable and unfathomable, but as was his wish, I am singing and thriving again with our beautiful children," says Nita, near the five-year anniversary of his death.
