As a swimmer, no one in our lifetimes would be able to touch him. As a role model, I think one may have to search elsewhere. Those who equate athletic accomplishment with human virtue are fooling themselves. An example is Lance Armstrong. He separated from his first wife because he was having an affair in Spain as he trained for his second Yellow Jersey win of the Tour de France. He "dropped a dime" on her to let her know he did not want to be her husband any longer. Sounds like a scum bucket to me. Michael may be a great swimmer, but when it comes to common sense and brains, there is much to be desired.

Micheal seems like an all-around great and balanced person. His first medal race in Beijing brought tears to my eyes. I am so glad that he has brought attention to the sport of swimming. I don't think that most people understand just how incredible his accomplishments are. Just to qualify for the U.S. Olympic swimming team is incredibly difficult. Along with Australia, the U.S. is the most competitive country in the sport in the world. To make it into the finals of an Olympic event is incredible. To win a gold medal in one event is...well I don't know even how to describe how awesome he is to have one 8 - the best ever. He is the most accomplished athlete in the world in any sport. Greater than Tiger Woods or Micheal Jordan. The best of the best and a good person.

I think he is wonderful. In doing what he's done with winning eight gold metals, he is going to bring so many young people into the sport of swimming. He will do for swimming what Tiger has done for golf.

i agree with you he is a very deciated swimmer if someone tells him he cant do someting he tries all the more to prove them wrong he succeds at whatever he sets his mind to whatever task or goal he has in front in of him

As a swimmer myself, Michael Phelps is my idol. He will train in the snow, rain, sun, hail and even with a 101 fever. Nothing can stop him. He is so determined that I would kill to have the skills he has. Not only is he a good swimmer but hes really gorgeous. His body is so chizled and brolic and when he swims and get out of the pool dripping wet he looks so sexy! I think I would have a heartattack of happineess if I ever met him. lol.
