'Justified' Recap And Review: 'The Hunt' - One Marshal And A Baby

3/4/2015 10:06am EST
Remember when Raylan Givens became a father? The baby Givens has been understandably overlooked for most of the final season of Justified, but Willa is front and center in "The Hunt," along with her mother Winona (a returning Natalie Zea) and oh yeah, all those bad guys we're still trying to find.

Picking up where last week's episode left off, Raylan, Rachel, Tim and associates are still looking for the wounded Ty Walker (Garret Dillahunt), who isn't going to get any help from Markham or surviving henchman Seabass (Scott Grimes), whom Markham bribes to abandon his former CO.

But Raylan ba...

'Justified' Recap: Bad Things Happen When 'Guy Walks Into A Bar'

3/21/2012 2:04am EDT
Justified keeps going strong this week, as Raylan and Quarles have another confrontation that makes up one of the best scenes in the show's history. If Timothy Olyphant or Neal McDonough don't win an Emmy, I will be shocked.

Nothing good ever happens past nightfall in Kentucky, at least on this show. There are two sheriff's deputies planting drugs in Shelby's truck, for one. He stops them with his shotgun, but it's clear they're playing dirty in Harlan County. Shelby then talks to Boyd, who decides he doesn't want his friend going anywhere alone from that point on. He goes to vis...

'Justified' Recap: Tying Up 'Loose Ends'

3/14/2012 2:03am EDT
Even the best Justified villain has to fall. And with only five episodes left in the show's third season, this is the beginning of what should be a fantastic end.

We start at the end of another long day for Raylan (does he even have short days?), as he contemplates what to do with the gun that killed his ex-wife's second husband. He stashes it in his apartment and then decides to inspect the ceiling.

The next morning, he's summoned into Art's office. Art wants to know what Raylan has on Quarles "right now that you can prove." After the resulting silence, he tells Raylan that until Quarl...

'Justified' Recap: 'The Man Behind The Curtain' (3.07)

2/29/2012 2:07am EST
This week's Justified is a slow episode by comparison, but leave it to one of TV's top writing staffs to have something worthwhile in even the quieter hours.

Still dealing with Winona's departure, Raylan is getting blitzed at a different place, which happens to be the bar below his new apartment. Imagine his surprise when Quarles shows up at the bar beside him. "You're a bouncer in a dive bar," he says, and is not impressed. Raylan retorts with details of Quarles' propensity for roughing up male escorts that I didn't need. The next day, determined to take Quarles down, he needles...

Q&A: How 'Justified' Star Timothy Olyphant Conquers TV

2/22/2012 1:48pm EST
If there's one film actor who came into television and blew the doors off the medium, it was Justified star Timothy Olyphant.

In three seasons as quick-witted, quick-drawing Kentucky marshal Raylan Givens, the Live Free or Die Hard actor hasn't given a bad performance. In fact, he hasn't given less than a great one. Whether it's his leveling stare or just the way he points his words, Olyphant carries himself with a natural intensity that makes Raylan the infamous character we've been told he is. Simply put, in someone else's hands, this role just wouldn't work.

Off-screen, he's incredib...

'Justified' Recap: 'When The Guns Come Out' (3.06)

2/22/2012 2:16am EST
By the title of this episode of Justified, you should be able to guess that there's more shooting than usual. Yet as is also usual, this show is a lot more than just its body count.

While Raylan is trying to figure out where Winona ran off to after she left him last week, lots of people are being shot (which is kind of typical for Kentucky). He's advised not to keep going after her, but we all know Raylan is too stubborn to listen. Instead, he goes looking for the money from the bank robbery she swiped last season, and when he finds it missing, he knows what's up. He asks Art for ...

'Justified' Recap: 'Thick As Mud' (3.05)

2/15/2012 2:03am EST
There's a lot going on in this week's Justified, and quite a few familiar faces. If "Thick As Mud" has a particular pop to it, it's because Elmore Leonard has a co-story credit for this ride.

While Limehouse is determined to keep Dickie (and anyone else) away from what remains of Mags' money, Boyd and Arlo are burying Devil's body after his bloody end, and Raylan's relationship with Winona is as rocky as it's always been...and oh crap, Dewey Crowe is missing some internal organs. That last part is courtesy of that creepy prison nurse Lance (Clayne Crawford), who just will not go awa...

'Justified' Recap: 'The Devil You Know' (3.04)

2/8/2012 2:20am EST
Justified: just when you think you've got it figured out, it keeps unraveling and then it punches you in the stomach. And it's worth all the pain, because it's the best series on TV.

This week, Devil's a little restless, but that's because he's got a meeting with Quarles. What the heck is going on? One of those instances where someone thinks they're bigger than they are, that's what. After his conversation with Boyd last week, Devil is twitchy, and Quarles does his best to make him feel important. "This is an opportunity that only happens once," he teases, and Devil is listening.

Q&A: 'Justified's' Erica Tazel - A Star On And Off-Screen

2/7/2012 4:50pm EST
Timothy Olyphant might be the star of FX's Justified, but he's far from the only one. Actress Erica Tazel has made the most out of her first series regular role as the no-nonsense Rachel Brooks.

From the pilot episode, Rachel has proven an effective balance to Raylan's more outside-the-lines approach, and we've seen their relationship grow along with her character. One of the highlights of season two came in "For Blood or Money" where we got to learn a lot more about Rachel, who has become one of Justified's most pleasant surprises, and that's because it's obvious how much thought a...

'Justified' Recap: 'Harlan Roulette' (3.03)

2/1/2012 2:12am EST
If you want to see just how far Justified has come, "Harlan Roulette" is the episode to look at. Colorful, intriguing and at a few points unsettling, it's the complete package.

Ellstin Limehouse is having words with Ava. He says she looks good, and she replies "better than the last time we saw each other," which is just one heck of a loaded sentence. She wants him to meet Boyd. And so, on a bridge in the middle of the night, with plenty of glowering from various minions on both sides, the two converse. "It has come to my attention that you are in possession of something that belo...

'Justified' Recap: 'Cut Ties' (3.02)

1/25/2012 2:10am EST
Episode two of Justified's second season is a solid standalone that also continues to hand us pieces of a masterful bigger picture.

Last week's episode ("The Gunfighter") started Justified's third season off strong. "Cut Ties" keeps up the standard, but in a different way.

Raylan wakes up in Winona and Gary's house, quickly mistaken for Gary by the realtor who's showing people around. Have a joke about Winona cheating on him with a realtor again. Once Raylan wakes up and pulls himself together, he visits Boyd in prison and actually asks him for relationship advice. Boyd points out that ...

'Justified' Recap: 'The Gunfighter' (3.01)

1/18/2012 2:07am EST
Here's why I call Justified the best series on TV: because every season, I ask myself "How can this possibly get any better?" and it always does.

"The Gunfighter" starts off simply enough, but within minutes we're reminded that everything in this world is much more complex than it appears. Winona finds herself being pulled over by the state police; seems that Art has been trying to reach her. She arrives at the hospital, where Art tells her "he's going to be all right," and we don't need to be told who he's talking about. Yes, that's Raylan taking a nap in a hospital bed, where we kn...

Q&A: New Elmore Leonard Novel As 'Justified' Premieres

1/17/2012 1:10pm EST
Elmore Leonard
Fans eagerly awaiting Justified's third season tonight shouldn't miss the newest Raylan Givens novel, which hits shelves today.

Before he was played to perfection by Timothy Olyphant, the character was created by legendary novelist Elmore Leonard.

Raylan's first appearance was in the 1993 novel Pronto, which was followed by 1995's Riding The Rap and the 2001 short story Fire In The Hole. The latter has been cited as the inspiration for Justified.

Now Mr. Leonard has brought back the literary incarnation with a new work, appropriately titled Raylan. At this weekend's Television Critics As...

The 11 Best From 2011

12/31/2011 11:00am EST
2011 was a fantastic year for entertainment. Here are my eleven favorite things from the year that's about to wrap, in chronological order...

1. Southland, TNT

(Season 3 began January 4)

I have to admit that I didn't keep up with TNT's gritty Los Angeles cop drama as much as I would have liked; it fell victim to sharing Tuesday nights with three other shows on my watch list. Yet when I did find time to catch it, I was no less than impressed every time.

There's been talk about the show's TV-MA content (allegedly the reason that NBC axed it), but the real talking point should be the st...

Q&A: 'InSight' Director Richard Gabai

10/15/2011 11:00am EDT
For every movie that you hear about, there's probably at least a dozen that you don't. It shouldn't surprise you that some of those flicks that don't get a big release or promo push are really, really good. Maybe even better than those big blockbusters that do get all the attention.

I recently spoke with Richard Gabai, director of InSight. The flick stars Natalie Zea (of Justified fame) as an ER nurse who begins experiencing the memories of a young stabbing victim whose life she tries to save. She partners with the detective working the case (Sean Patrick Flanery of Boondock Saints) t...

'Justified's' Joelle Carter To Guest On 'Prime Suspect'

9/30/2011 3:21pm EDT
Justified fans can get their Ava Crowder fix when Joelle Carter appears on NBC's Prime Suspect.

Carter plays Louise Iannacone, the wife of a stockbroker who becomes Detective Jane Timoney (Maria Bello)'s first suspect when he's murdered, in the episode entitled "Great Guy, Yet: Dead." It will air Thursday, October 13 at 10 PM ET/PT on NBC, with a re-air that Saturday, October 15 at 9 PM ET/PT.

She's best known for her role on Justified, where she's spent two seasons as Ava, the former love interest of U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens (Emmy nominee Timothy Olyphant). In season two, with Raylan...

'Justified' 2.13 'Bloody Harlan' Recap and Review

5/5/2011 2:12am EDT
Is anyone else having a hard time believing that we're to the end of Justified's second season already? I still vividly remember last season's finale.

While "Bloody Harlan" is no "Bulletville," it's satisfying in its own way, and I can already see the possibilities for season three playing out in my head.

We start with a familiar scene: Raylan walks into Art's office. This time, he's asking for another month off, which Art agrees is a good idea. Then Raylan adds that he wants to transfer back to Glynco and return to his former job as a firearms instructor. Art needs to think about t...

'Justified' 2.12 'Reckoning' Recap and Review

4/28/2011 6:55am EDT
If this week's Justified doesn't end up as someone's Emmy submission, I'll be surprised. So why do I feel slightly underwhelmed by it? Well, I think I was expecting a lot more than just great acting.

That great acting starts from the first moment. Raylan arrives at his father's house, which has become a crime scene. We now know for sure that Aunt Helen is dead. What a shame. Our hero sees the aftermath of her demise in slow motion and near silence. Normally, I hate slow motion scenes. Most of the time, slow motion is an annoying visual effect for a moment that's sorely overblown....

'Justified' 2.11 'Full Commitment' Recap and Review

4/21/2011 6:20am EDT
As much as last week's Justified was a filler ep, at least now we have a lot of fun things to play with. We pick up in the fallout of last week's shootout, and the Marshals Office is buzzing with activity. Raylan totally does not care what the Army CID guy has to tell him about the two shooters, who are ex-Army themselves. The Army CID guy isn't surprised that a lot of people might want to shoot Raylan. Obviously, he's a quick study.

Gary shows up and he wants to pick a fight with both Raylan and Winona. He wants to know how much she's willing to put up with, or if it will take he...

'Justified' 2.11 'Full Commitment' Advance Review

4/19/2011 5:00pm EDT
Tomorrow night's Justified feels like the most awkward family gathering ever. I mean that as high praise.

In last week's episode, we saw a lot of actual and potential developments in relationships, and "Full Commitment" shows us the side effects of all of them. Yes, serious things happen - you can add to the body count this week - but most of what makes this hour work is the awkward, often hilarious interactions as Raylan attempts to get to the bottom of last week's fracas and everyone else gets caught up in the tornado that is Raylan Givens.

There are so many fantastic moments i...

'Justified' 2.10 'Debts and Accounts' Recap and Review

4/14/2011 2:14am EDT
It's hard to believe that after tonight, we only have three new episodes of Justified left. How the cable TV season flies when you're having fun! "Debts and Accounts" is the episode that pulls together all the season's storylines in preparation for the end, and while that keeps it from being the best episode itself, it accomplishes that task with relative ease.

Raylan walks into work, is immediately met by Art, and the two start talking over the aftermath of last week's shooting of Coover Bennett. This is business as usual. We've seen it in previous episodes. But today Raylan is a lit...

'Justified' 2.07 'Save My Love' Recap And Review

3/24/2011 7:07am EDT
In last week's Justified, Raylan apparently kept Winona out of a world of hurt after she swiped money from an evidence locker. I say "apparently" because this week, we find out that things can always get worse. The end result is a fair episode that won't stick long in my memory.

Winona wakes up with a start when she realizes that Raylan didn't recover the right hundred-dollar bill after all. "It was never here," she tells him. "The one I had, had a corner torn off." He points out that she didn't mention it before that moment, making all the work he did the previous episode a huge wa...

'Justified' 2.07 'Save My Love' Advance Review

3/22/2011 6:00pm EDT
I love this picture, because something tells me that Raylan Givens has this expression on his face a lot. With episodes like tomorrow's all-new Justified, I certainly don't blame him.

This week's Justified picks up the B-story from last week: Winona's screwed up and now it's up to Raylan to get her out of trouble. Things were not as okay as they seemed at the end of last Wednesday - to say anything more would be a major spoiler - and so it's up to my favorite U.S. Marshal to save the day again, under escalating circumstances. The episode does a great job of keeping tension througho...

'Justified' 2.06 'Blaze of Glory' Recap and Review

3/17/2011 2:10am EDT
When I saw the preview for this episode of Justified, I was apprehensive at best. The show ended on a nail-biting cliffhanger last week and now it was heading into all too familiar territory with a Winona-in-peril story? I was skeptical, but I should've remembered that Justified rarely goes the way that we expect it to. I'd dare to say that "Blaze of Glory" isn't really a Winona story at all. She's our way into a main plot that actually belongs to Art Mullen.

We lead off with a pair of ATF agents taking statements from Boyd and Ava about the robbery attempt. Boyd tells them that he wa...

'Justified' 2.06 'Blaze of Glory' Advance Review

3/15/2011 9:42pm EDT
If you've seen the promo spot for tomorrow's Justified, you'd be forgiven for thinking it's one of those episodes where someone close to the hero is imperiled and the incensed hero gets revenge for the affront.

You'd also be wrong.

Yes, Winona (Natalie Zea) does get herself into some trouble, and she goes to Raylan (Timothy Olyphant) to get her out of it. Those of you who are in dislike with Winona - myself included - will probably just be even more so with this episode, in which she's not too smart. If there's one good thing I can say about Winona, it's that at least she recogniz...

On Location With 'Justified'

3/10/2011 12:15pm EST
Nothing can top FX's Justified, which is the best show currently on television - except for the chance to see how the near-perfect drama series comes together.

It's Monday morning in Newhall, CA - the oldest district of the city of Santa Clarita, and less than two miles from the California Institute of the Arts, where I went to school a decade ago. The call sheet I'm handed when I arrive at the shooting location tells me that everyone else has been here - a nondescript suburban block that could be anywhere - since 6:30 at the latest. Suddenly, my 8 AM wake-up call doesn't seem so...

'Justified' 2.04 'For Blood Or Money' Recap And Review

3/3/2011 2:02am EST
This week's Justified is a great example of how anything can be made interesting in the right hands. While it has to move forward ongoing plotlines with necessary scenes that could be rote, it takes advantage of the situation by using the time and structure to shine a light on one of its solid supporting characters. By episode's end, not only do we get the plot moved forward, but we also know Rachel Brooks a lot better than we did before.

After telling us last week that Dickie Bennett ordered the robbery of a drug bus belonging to the Dixie Mafia, the show can't just ignore the obvi...

'Justified' 2.02 'The Life Inside' Recap And Review

2/17/2011 9:02am EST
If you read my advance review, you'll know I really, really liked tonight's episode of Justified. And even though it's been a few weeks and I've seen it a few times more? I still really, really like this episode.

It starts with the unsavory characters. Dickie and Coover Bennett are out disposing of Walt McCready's corpse, being that their mother poisoned him last week, and bickering as siblings do. Meanwhile, Boyd Crowder comes out of the depths of a mine to find Raylan waiting for him. He reminds Raylan that he characterized him as liking "to get money and blow shit up." Raylan brushe...
