Birth Name: Anna Wintour
Born: 11/03/1949
Birth Place: London, England, GB

Born Nov. 3, 1949 in London, England, Anna Wintour was the daughter of famed newspaper editor Charles Wintour and grew up as ambitious and driven as he was. She cut her professional teeth as an editorial assistant at Harper's & Queen, where she quickly made a name for herself as a fearless visionary who used her conviction and connections to make jaw-droppingly creative shoots happen, no matter what cost or inconvenience to others. While this talent helped her create impressive work, it also irritated higher-ups, and she was fired after nine months as a junior fashion editor at Harper's Bazaar. Wintour resurfaced with stints as fashion editor at Viva, Savvy and New York and made ripples throughout the industry when she told the legendary Vogue editor Grace Mirabella to her face that she wanted her job.

Brought on board Vogue as creative director in the early 1980s, she earned the nickname "Nuclear Wintour" for her iron-fisted leadership style as editor-in-chief of British Vogue and then House & Garden before finally landing her long-stated goal: editor-in-chief of American Vogue. Reinvigorating the magazine and striking a nerve by renewing its dedication to haute couture served through the prism of celebrity-driven covers and features, Wintour ascended to the ultimate power position in the fashion industry but garnered controversy for her pro-fur stance and impossibly high work standards. Instantly recognizable for her signature bob and ever-present sunglasses, Wintour was the thinly veiled subject of her former assistant's best-selling novel The Devil Wears Prada, which became a 2006 blockbuster film starring an Oscar-nominated Meryl Streep. The famously frosty Wintour had the last laugh, however, when the hit film and the documentary "The September Issue" (2009) only helped increase her star power.
