'The Affair' Season Finale Review: 'It Wasn't Real'

'The Affair' Season 1 Finale Review: 'It Wasn't Real'
The first season finale of The Affair takes an ambiguous approach with its conclusion and leaves some of the mystery still alive for the season to come. Though it is not explicitly communicated, the series hints at definitive answers regarding Scotty’s death. For instance, Noah’s paranoia about his car certainly tells us that Scotty was run over by that particular vehicle and that he might actually be guilty, despite the fact that the show never confirms who was driving the car that fateful night (leaving that specific detail up for debate). Other mysteries that have run throughout the seas...

'The Affair' Review: 'I Don't Want This Life'

The Affari: Ruth Wilson and Dominic West
Episode 9 takes The Affair into full-blown, soap opera, melodrama territory and I don’t completely hate it. It has definitely taken a significant turn with the mounting drama surrounding these characters especially in these last few episodes. What began as a contemplative examination of human behavior has evolved into an intensely distraught and messy narrative with various threads and characters intertwining. While it may seem like a drastic shift, it doesn’t all feel out of the realm of possibilities. Let’s not forget that the series opened with an unknown crime story, a kid faking a suic...

'The Affair' Recap & Review: 'Safe'

December 10th, 2014 10:24am EST
The Affair
Remember when I thought Noah was the most reliable narrator on the show? Midway through the season, I began to deeply question Alison’s recounting of her experiences that summer. Week after week her story was a depressing tale of a meek, generally innocent and troubled woman, who just got swept up by a suave and attractive but married man. Noah was her only source of contentment, the only means of escape from her tragic existence. She was a martyr, supporting herself and her husband after the death of her son, liked and nurtured by everyone around her. It was a little much, and it turned me...

'The Affair' Review: 'A Selfish Act'

November 25th, 2014 10:25am EST
The Affair
Focusing on the fallout of Noah and Alison’s affair, Episode 7 might be the finest hour the show has given us. There is no question that the most interesting material in the show hasn’t necessarily been the actual scenes between Noah and Alison indulging in their affair, but everything else, really: the scenes that show them dealing with their respective families/world and how their actions affect, however small or inconsequential, their lives and the people around them. Week after week I find myself wondering more about Helen, Cole, the Lockhart Ranch and even the criminal mystery than I d...

'The Affair' Recap: 'Stop Doing Bad Things'

November 11th, 2014 3:20pm EST
The Affair
After deviating somewhat from the established narrative structure The Affair returns to the standard formula (albeit in the reverse order) with Episode 5. In a notable development, we finally learn who the victim of the crime in question is and are closer to understanding the larger, intertwined mystery. But while this development is crucial to the narrative, the show doesn’t dwell on this new piece of information. It treats it as nonchalantly as possible, because, while it is a pretty major detail, it is not the focus of the show or the episode. This hour is all about family. Noah and Alis...

Fashion Fails: Ruth Wilson, Jessie J, Maggie Gyllenhaal, More

Ruth Wilson
It's Fashion Fail Time! That means we take a break from letting you know how good all of your favorite stars look to show the other side of fashion: the fails!

Ruth Wilson's outfit looks similar, doesn't it? That's because Maggie Gyllenhaal wore it last June with a matching skirt - and it was a fail then, too! The bulging waist section looks worse with the tight black dress Wilson has paired it with.

Speaking of Maggie Gyllenhaal, she wore this Goth-y dress adorned with an assortment of jewels that put it over-the-top. Are those little pouches near her shoulders?

Alice Dellal wen...

Alyssa Milano
It's Fashion Fail Time! That means we take a break from letting you know how good all of your favorite stars look to show the other side of fashion: the fails!

Alyssa Milano wore this dreadful top that features not one, but three different animal prints. She then paired it with a striped skirt that didn't match at all.

Ruth Wilson tried on this artistic dress to the Harper's Bazaar Women of the Year Awards. We definitely don't get it, especially the flaring skirt.

Kate Nash is all set for the Renaissance faire in this poofy red gown, matched with fishnets and combat boots.

Jude Law
Sherlock Holmes star Jude Law has gone public with his new romance after stepping out with British actress Ruth Wilson in California.

The actor grew close to Wilson last year after they co-starred in a West End production of Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning play "Anna Christie", and the Daily Mail reports their relationship only recently turned romantic and they were snapped together for the first time in Venice Beach on Sunday.

Law has been single since splitting from on/off girlfriend Sienna Miller at the beginning of last year. She is now pregnant with her boyfriend Tom Sturridg...

'Luther' Review: 'Series 2, Episode 2' (2.02)

October 5th, 2011 11:05pm EDT
Luther
This week's Luther is not unlike my least favorite episode of 24: a character gets tortured for an entire episode, and I spend that time feeling my stomach turn to the point where I don't ever want to watch it again.

DCI John Luther and his team are spending this week trying to rescue their colleague DS Ripley from the clutches of Cameron Pell, the killer they couldn't catch last time. While Ripley's anguished screams fill the background, Cameron demands attention that Luther has no intention of giving him, less Ripley become expendable and end up dead.

Schenk proves he's more t...

'Luther' 2.01 'Series 2, Episode 1' Review

September 28th, 2011 11:06pm EDT
Luther
The first series of Luther scared the hell out of me on at least one occasion. I couldn't help but wonder: could it top that? Should it? Well, series two was certainly going to try.

While Alice Morgan (the devilishly delightful Ruth Wilson) sits in a mental hospital, DCI John Luther (Emmy nominee Idris Elba) makes a half-hearted attempt to kill himself. You can't blame him, considering that he lost his wife at the hands of his close friend last series. When that doesn't work, he turns to an awkward friendship with his wife's lover Mark North (Paul McGann) and of course, to his job...
