Lana Turner is to me the ultimate Movie Star...glamorous, what other actress during trying times could swirl over to the full stocked bar in the scene in flowing chiffon and make it all believeable? Lana Turner could. A much better actress than given credit for. Some Ms Turner's early work as Queen of MGM in films including "The Postman Always Rings Twice" and "The Bad And The Beautiful" are brilliant performances. And she did it without nudity and cussing. Lana Turner's hard partying ways and the sensational murder of a mafia hood John Stompanto in her mansion -the details of which to this day is somewhat unsettled- added to her bad girl image. Only Lana could have survived that scandal and indeed emerge a bigger star with huge hits in her soap operas "Imitation of Life" "Love Has Many Faces", "Portrait in Black" "By Love Possessed" and most of all in Ross Hunter's "Madame X" in which Ms Turner gave a truly superb performance and should have been nominated for that film but likely many in Hollywood would not vote for her due to her scandalous ways and the Stompanto Murder. After her days of high stardom Lana Turner did some TV appearing on "Falcon Crest" as a rival to Jane Wyman, and then toured Summer Stock in shows such as "Bell Book and Candle" taking her curtain call ever like a great movie star in flowing Chiffon gowns to standing ovations. Ms Turner retired and spent the remainder of her years quietly after a very rambunctious life. | ||
