In "The Firm," based on the best-selling novel by John Grisham, Mitch McDeer (Tom Cruise) is a young man from a poor Southern family who has struggled through Harvard Law School to graduate fifth in his class. Mitch is entertaining offers from major firms in New York and Chicago, but when Memphis-based Bendini, Lambert, & Locke offer him a 20 percent higher salary than the best offer he's received, in addition to an enticing variety of perks and fringe benefits, he decides to sign on and remain in the South.

'Big Love' Cast And Writers React To Its Series Finale (Video)

March 21st, 2011 3:37pm EDT
Big Love
Last night, HBO ended its series "Big Love" with a bang to say the least. For those of you that followed the show and haven't seen the series finale yet, (spoiler alert) the star and main character, Bill Henrickson, (played by Bill Paxton) was shot and killed by his neighbor. The word on the street is that it was a very fitting and a decent ending to the series. HBO has provided us with a behind the scenes reaction to the series conclusion.

Check out the video above and hear how the creators and writers came to the series conclusions, as well as Bill Paxton's initial reaction and thoughts...

Roush Review: 'Big Love' Finale

March 21st, 2011 2:53pm EDT
Big Love | Photo Credits: Isabella Vosmikova/HBO
If HBO were to do a sequel to Big Love, it would have to be called something like The Three Sister-Wives. Not exactly Chekhov, but I'd probably watch. Barb, Margene and Nicki carrying on without Bill: That's already a home plus.

I had drifted a while ago from the flock of followers of this weird and lately quite preachy series about polygamy and family and faith, but did a marathon catch-up over the last week in time to watch the final chapter, which aimed for transcendence and at times achieved it. The hour-plus finale thankfully shucked much of the grotesque Utah-Mormon-Gothic melodrama ...

'Big Love' Convinces Husbands That Threesomes Are A Bad Idea

February 17th, 2011 8:34am EST
Big Love
HBO's TV drama "Big Love" is helping to dispel the myth that multi-partner sex is a good thing, according to the show's star Ginnifer Goodwin.

The actress admits she's often thanked by complete strangers for helping to show randy husbands the downside of threesomes and foursomes.

Goodwin, who plays one of a polygamist's three wives on the show, says, "Women come up to me on the street a lot... They all say, 'Thank you so much... because my husband or boyfriend or lover wanted to bring additional women into the bedroom before we saw your show.'"

Bill Paxton plays her Mormon husband in the...

'Big Love' Star Patrick Fabian Is A Dad

September 16th, 2010 8:47pm EDT
Patrick Fabian
Actor Patrick Fabian has some "Big Love" in his life - he is a first-time dad. The TV star and his wife Mandy Steckelberg welcomed daughter Abbey Ray into the world on Wednesday.

The "Big Love" star and his wife picked the name because they're both huge Beatles fans and love the Fab Four's "Abbey Road" album.

Fabian is awestruck after witnessing his partner go through the wonders of labor. He tells People.com, "Being a father for the first time is fantastic. My love and admiration for what women can do has gone up 1,000 per cent."

Chloe Sevigny Is An Animal

September 5th, 2010 9:00am EDT
Chloe Sevigny
Chloe Sevigny went to HBO's Post Award Reception for the Emmy Awards wearing a short, leopard print dress. Sometimes a star wears the dress, but in this case the dress is wearing the star. And we don't like that Chloe matched her lipstick to her clutch.

Chloe made headlines earlier this year for blasting the latest season of her show "Big Love." She was reported as saying, "It was awful this season, as far as I'm concerned. I'm not allowed to say that!...I feel like it kind of got away from itself..."

The actress moved quickly to play down her remarks, blaming the media for blowing the si...

Emmy Voters, Please Recognize These Shows & Stars!

July 13th, 2009 11:49am EDT
Big Love
The 2009 Emmy nominees will be announced Thursday morning and despite recent changes to the voting system, Emmy voters just can't seem to stray away from the same old outcome. Sure, 30 Rock gets showered with love, but how many more times does Mariska Hargitay need to make the cut?

Here are some names we'd like to see on the roster this year (in alphabetical order):

Big Love (HBO) - Ok Emmy voters, it's been three seasons. It's time to get over your aversion to the icky polygamy premise and embrace the TV bliss that is "Big Love." After a two year break (damn writers' strike!) the sh...

TV Honorees That Should Get Their First Shot At Emmy Nominations

June 10th, 2009 12:02pm EDT
Aaron Paul
Yesterday, we went over the Emmy nominees who have overstayed their welcome. Those perennial TV honorees that simply don't deserve the recognition they once did or, in some cases, never did at all.

So if they're out, who's in? Surely, there can't be too many nominees waiting in the wings. After all, television professionals choose these awards; they can't possibly leave out any substantial number of qualified candidates in favor of perennial duds.

Unfortunately, that's the way it is. Voters simply don't like to change their ways with regards to voting. It almost seems that a ...

Movie Remakes & Recastings We Hope To Never See

June 8th, 2009 9:40am EDT
Mary Poppins
In the wake of the current brain-draining drive to remake just about everything Hollywood has ever had to offer, there are some films that are so sacred they should never be touched. This is a blatant retort to the deluge of watered down franchises, remakes, medium changes, etc. It ranges in levels of snark from low to apocalyptic strength.

My frustration with this extremely long trend came to a fever pitch after watching the Obsessed trailer. Anyone even peripherally familiar with Fatal Attraction could easily catch the obvious, racially spurred recasting of a classic film.

Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange Star In 'Grey Gardens', Premiering Tonight On HBO

Grey Gardens
They were once steeped in affluence and privilege, enjoying a luxurious lifestyle in East Hampton while they defied convention amidst the social royalty. Based on the women who inspired the Maysles Brothers' 1975 documentary, the HBO Film starring Drew Barrymore and Jessica Lange, tells the story of "Big Edie" and "Little Edie" Bouvier Beale, relatives of Jacqueline Onassis, whose eccentric, mutually dependent lives played out in a decaying house known as Grey Gardens. Using the documentary as a framework, Michael Sucsy's original story for Grey Gardens offers a wry, behind-the-scenes look...

HBO Vs. Showtime

Big Love
An average TV viewer has hundreds of options to watch on any given time slot, so if he or she chooses to pay extra money for a special channel, it better deliver on what it promises. HBO and Showtime are two channels that offer movies - both new and old - and quality television programming. Usually the shows are inappropriate for regular cable, and they are given more freedom to be daring, innovative, and crude.

HBO has been showing new movies and producing popular television since 1977, while Showtime focused more on boxing championships and premiering impressive short independent fi...

Emmy Nominations Reaction: Who Was Snubbed, Who Shouldn't Be A Nominee

July 18th, 2008 9:13am EDT
Neil Patrick Harris
With the writer's strike a distant memory and an exciting new fall season dead ahead, we're finally ready to celebrate TV again. And what better way than with a lavish awards show?

Yes, the Emmy nominations were revealed at dawn in Los Angeles Thursday morning in a delightful little ceremony that saw Neil Patrick Harris and Kristin Chenoweth squeeze about two-dozen jokes in between their reading off the teleprompter.

There were surprises leading to gasps from the press, and plenty of nominations they all saw coming. Newcomer "Mad Men" led the drama category with 16 nominations w...

TV Stars Who Deserve Emmy Nominations On July 17, Part 1

Boston Legal
Last week, I helped the Emmy panelists decide upon which series to cast their vote for, and now it's the actors' turn.

The Emmy blue ribbon panel received a group of lists from the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences last week. These were top ten lists from which they were to select the five nominees for the big Emmy show. They will view select episodes from each nominee and base their decision on what they see.

It's nigh on impossible to glean an accurate impression from a small sample, especially when it comes to acting. Many characters are given complex arcs from which the...

The Golden Globe Awards have officially been scrapped and replaced by a press conference announcing the winners. Snubbed performers and filmmakers can take comfort in the fact that come Golden Globe night, the nominees will be at home too.

Steve Carell (Dan in Real Life)

As the obnoxious Michael Scott, Steve Carell is nominated in the "Best Performance by an Actor In A Television Series" for "The Office," but it's in film that Carell really shows of his impressive range. Best TV Shows You Aren't Watching, Part 4

October 22nd, 2007 11:48am EDT
Big Love
Don't let the patriarchal overtones of HBO's polygamist drama fool you. It's the women who rule the roost in Big Love. Sure, Bill Henrickson (Bill Paxton) has three wives, but he only appears to be in charge of his family and life.

Whether it's his compound past forcing him to deal with his crazy family and cult leader Roman (a fantastic Harry Dean Stanton) or the wives banding together and withholding sex, Bill's always got his hands full, juggling business, family and plenty of lies. The show walks a tightrope and is tenser and more tightly written than most action programs because ...
