Oscar Nomination Reaction: The Snubs, Surprises & Who Shouldn't Have Been Nominated

January 23rd, 2009 9:55am EST
The Dark Knight
There's nothing better than a good surprise on Oscar morning, and this year we had one in almost every category. Before we get to the snubs, the surprises and who shouldn't be nominated, let's take a look at what type of a morning this was:

This was the morning that The Academy once again showed how out-of-touch it is. By not dominating "The Dark Knight", the Oscars continued to show that it doesn't care about nominating movies people actually like. There was absolutely no reason this film shouldn't get nominated: It has a 94% percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes, it got an A from audi...

Slumdog Millionaire
The time has come, after several months of campaigning and voting, we're finally set for the big day. No, not the inauguration. Please. We're talking about Oscar morning.

Those fifteen minutes at the crack of dawn where overly-caffeinated celebs awkwardly read the names of the top five in each category. Always gripping. Also, this is prime time for predictions. All the returns are in, the precursor season is over, so there's not excuses left. Without delay, here are my final Oscar Predictions.

Okay, one delay. I should note that I hate being right. I hate getting predictio...

January 7th, 2009 9:07am EST
Marisa Tomei
Marisa Tomei developed a love for hula hooping while shaping up to play an erotic dancer in new movie The Wrestler because she found it to be the best exercise.

The actress stepped up her work-out regime as soon as she realized she'd be stripping in the film - and there was one routine that helped her tone up more than anything else.

She explains, "I hula hooped a lot, which is my favorite part of my routine...You're using your core muscles."

Tomei showed off her hula-hoop skills during an appearance on comedienne Ellen Degeneres' daytime talk show on Tuesday.

Marisa Tomei Too Shy To Strip

December 25th, 2008 8:30am EST
Marisa Tomei
Marisa Tomei is adamant she could never work as a lapdancer - because she is not talkative enough. The actress plays a stripper in new movie The Wrestler, but insists real-life topless dancers have to be outgoing and chatty to succeed.

She tells USA Today newspaper, "I could never do it. Not even on the stripping level - on the social level. You have to be a super-social, garrulous, entertaining person, a great storyteller. You have to have a boundless amount of energy.

"I like to have fun, and I go out and have a lot of fun. But I'm not really an entertainer that way. I'm much m...

Review: Rourke Tears It Up In 'The Wrestler'

December 19th, 2008 9:22am EST
The Wrestler
It couldn't have had a more clich├ęd premise: A washed-up athlete struggles against the odds for one last shot at greatness. But Darren Aronofsky reinvents this well-worn genre with "The Wrestler," and allows Mickey Rourke to reinvent himself with disarming charisma and unexpected vulnerability.

Rourke gives the performance of his long and erratic career in a stripped-down film that's brutally honest yet funny, touching and ultimately even sweet. His puffy, twisted features suggest a life lived infamously, but if you look into his eyes, you can see glimmers of the young charmer full of ...

12 Upcoming Films To See Before Oscar Night

November 12th, 2008 9:52am EST

This year's Oscar race isn't very deep with talent, and at this point there are probably only eight films with a legitimate shot at getting a nod for Best Picture. But those that have a chance at a nomination also have a great chance of winning.

One such film, "The Dark Knight", has already hit screens, but the rest of this group will premiere in the coming weeks as studios scramble to get their prestige pictures on the big screen before the year-end deadline.

Every year, film fans are tormented by the true snobs who catch all these possible nominees before the big awards show att...

Where Are They Now?: 'A Different World'

February 14th, 2008 11:00am EST
A Different World
"A Different World," a half-hour sitcom about students at fictional Hillman College, was on the air from 1987 to 1993. It was the creation of Bill Cosby and originally served as a spin-off venue for then Cosby kid Lisa "Denise" Bonet.

However, it wasn't until Lisa Bonet was booted from the show (due to a pregnancy) that "A Different World" really took off in popularity. Fueled by a core ensemble cast of likeable characters - Dwayne, Whitley, Freddie, Kim, Jaleesa, Ron, and Walter - "A Different World" was in the top 10 shows in the Nielsen ratings for five of the six years it aired.
