Judy Tenuta
Buy This, Pigs!
Release Date 1987
Label Elektra Asylum
Rating:

Vintage Judy Tenuta, Buy This, Pigs! was the kickoff concert to her career in comedy. Tenuta opens the show by spitting her gum into a gleeful crowd, "Crawl for it!" she commands. And they do! The audience seems to thrive on her reverse-psychology approach to winning them over. This album includes all the gimmicks her persona is best-known for: her own religion (Judyism), bad Yoko Ono jokes ("If that bullet would have been just a little to the left..."), evolutionary wisecracks, rabid accordion playing, and, of course, male-bashing for fun and profit. The album includes a half a dozen of Judy Tenuta's tireless rampages set to music. Typical lyrics go something like this: "Looks don't count just be Miss Congeniality/smile when they call you ugly tub of lard," wavering from something sweet in the first line to something just plumb obnoxious in the next. Her timing is impeccable and her wit is only to be matched by her audacity. In one segment Tenuta complains about a man trying to pick her up on the plane, "puffing on a cigar the size of God's ego." In another she compares a would-be suitor to a Pez dispenser: "his head flipped back 180 degrees and his tongue popped out." Somehow, what would normally be viewed as threatening, or labeled as feminist and immediately discarded by the general public, is made palatable by Tenuta. Her overblown stage personality (a caricature of herself?) is completely out of her ever-lovin' mind. Buy This Pigs! provides a sweet, breathy relief from what is expected from "typical" female comics whose monotonous voices drone out their dreary lives with husband and boyfriends. Tenuda is political, larger-than-life from the get-go, and great at maintaining her special type of frenetic energy throughout. She feeds a double-dose of feminism to the hungry for intelligent humor type crowd, who, unaware, gobbles down everything she puts on their plates...including "hot dog soup," her dad's specialty. "He'd eat the hot dogs and we'd drink the juice." This is one of cleaner recordings you can find with the name Judy Tenuta attached to it; one of the few in which she failed to alienate the average comedy club goer (before she had her own following and was still trying to sell concert tickets, of course). This piece is a must for every collector's shelf, and a fairly good album for the pedestrian Judy Tenuta listener as well. Sandy Lawson, Rovi
